It was county final day on the hurling front today, with holders Tooreen hosting the decider in glorious sunshine at the East Mayo village against close neighbours and fierce rivals Ballyhaunis. Last year, Tooreen ended their neighbours’ push for six county titles in a row by beating them decisively in the final but today the townies reclaimed the Tyrell Cup, winning a keenly contested decider on a 1-12 to 1-10 scoreline. Colm Gannon’s report on the match for the Mayo Advertiser is here.
It’s been quite a week, all told, for Ballyhaunis, who last Sunday reclaimed senior football status by winning the county Intermediate title for the first time in 26 years. Clinching two county titles in a week sure is good going, no matter how you cut it.
