The Round 3 matches in the Senior, Intermediate and Junior football Championships all took place over the weekend. A hectic weekend of football it proved to be too and, as the dust begins to settle on it, the group placings have been decided and the draws for the quarter-finals have been made, as well as for the dreaded relegation play-offs.
Several stories vie for attention in the SFC. I suppose the biggest one has to be the eclipse of Castlebar Mitchels last night, with the three-in-a-row champions from a few years back losing out to Westport. With Breaffy prevailing in a tempestuous encounter with Charlestown, Mitchels were pipped for second place in Group 4.
The Neale, meanwhile, continue to add fresh exploits to their story. They were beaten today by Ballaghaderreen but they finished just ahead of Belmullet on points difference in the table. I mean just ahead – the Erris lads were squeezed out by just a single point and so The Neale qualified for the quarter-finals in what is their debut season at Senior level.
Ballaghaderreen ended up topping Group 1 and so made it through to the quarters with the minimum of fuss. So too did Ballintubber, winners last night over Davitts, and they were joined from Group 2 by Aghamore, who sealed second place with a win over Moy Davitts yesterday evening.
I’m not well enough positioned to say what constituted the game of the weekend but last night’s cracker between Ballina Stephenites and Knockmore must surely be a strong contender. Ballina struggled for long stretches to make headway against a deep-lying, hard-working Knockmore team but the Stephenites came with a late, decisive burst to seal victory by a point. Both teams made it through from Group 3.
Here are all the weekend’s results from the SFC.
Group 1: Belmullet 2-6, Garrymore 1-6; Ballaghaderreen 3-12, The Neale 1-11.
