Barry Regan wins Player of the Year award

Congrats to Ballaghaderreen’s Barry Regan who was named as the county’s Player of the Year at a big bash in the Knockranny House Hotel in Westport on Friday night last (more details here).  Barry beat off competition from clubmates Stephen Drake, Andy Moran and Barry Kelly as well as from Charlestown’s Tom Parsons to land the award, which was decided via an online poll in the Mayo News (see, this trend is catching).  It’s been a good year for the Ballagh target man and, with an obvious vacancy in the county team at full-forward, you’d have to think that Johnno will be wanting to give him a run in the position once the action gets going again in the New Year.  To date, Barry has seen little action at inter-county level: he was in the squad for the 2006 Championship, coming on as a sub for Kevin O’Neill in the quarter-final replay against Laois, but he’s never featured so far under The Second Coming. Now would seem to be the time to put that one straight.
