Back

I’ve been fairly inactive here the last while for the simple reason that I was away on holidays. I did pack the laptop alright but it wasn’t opened much over the last two weeks, what with all that switching off and tuning out that needed to be done. Our return from the sun late last night appears to have coincided […]

Monday match reports

It’s the day after the match, I’m still in the west and it’s still roasting. There’s nothing like an Irish summer’s day when the sun decides to shine. Here’s what’s online about our one-point win over a battling Louth side yesterday: Locals: Mayo News, Connaught Telegraph, Western People, Dundalk Democrat, LM FM. Nationals: Irish Independent (match report, Kevin McStay quotes), […]

Game day – keep moving on up

We’re back in National League action this evening, in what’s an eagerly anticipated clash between the top two teams in Division One this year. It’s Kerry we’re up against at Austin Stack Park in Tralee (throw-in 7.30pm), the match is live on RTÉ2 and Kildare’s Brendan Cawley is the ref. It would be tempting to ascribe – as many have […]

LGFA match switched to Bekan

The LGFA match this afternoon between Mayo and Galway has been switched from Tuam to the Connacht Centre of Excellence at Bekan. Throw-in time is pushed back to 4pm, by which time the worst of the rain will hopefully have eased in the west. The switch was announced by GAA/LGFA live streamer Jerome Quinn (here) and he says they’re hoping […]

Mayo 2-21 Down 1-11 – dominant opening round display

If momentum truly is an important factor in this year’s condensed inter-county season, then the early evidence from Mayo is already looking positive. Once we got on top of this National League opener at a rain-soaked MacHale Park today we fairly showed Down a clean pair of heels and we won pulling up well before the finish. We were never […]

Mayo 5-20 Tipperary 3-13: Cillian runs riot in Tipp thumping

Well, hands up all those of you who saw that coming. I did have the idle thought ahead of throw-in today that, if we started well in today’s All-Ireland semi-final with Tipperary, we might just gut them but I still didn’t expect it to happen. But gut them we did and this game was well over as a contest before […]

Hope springs eternal

This article first appeared in this week’s edition of the Mayo News as the ‘On the Road’ piece in the sports supplement – it’s here. I could, I suppose, say that at this stage the car knows how to drive itself from our house in Dublin down to Castlebar but, of course, self-driving technology isn’t there yet. With three cross-country […]
