Championship prediction mini-league 2019 – first update

Seeing as the Championship got going over the weekend with action in all four provinces it seems only fair, now that the dust has settled on these opening exchanges, to report on who’s come out of the traps smartest in this year’s Championship prediction mini-league.

There’s a real Mayo News football podcast – specifically the New York series – flavour to the top of the table. Jim Zoldy, who heads the table on 161 points, featured in the podcast episode recorded at Gaelic Park while Anne-Marie Flynn is, of course, a more regular participant and popped up in two of the New York episodes.

As you’d imagine, it’s all fairly bunched at the upper reaches of the table – with just four points separating first from tenth – so the fun’s only really starting. I stumbled a bit myself coming out the starting gate but I’m only twelve points off the lead so just tucked in behind the leading group … for now at least.

Here’s how the leaderboard looks after the first weekend of action.

  1. May as well enjoy the view from the top now because if every other year’s performance is anything to go by, it’s going to be a slow slide to the bottom!

  2. Western People has next Friday’s Leitrim v Mayo Connacht Minor game down for Carrick on Shannon but my Leitrim connections tell me it is fixed for Balliinamore which is another half hour on the road for anybody travelling from Mayo.

  3. Your Leitrim connections are correct, AndyD – Mayo GAA have tonight confirmed it’s on in Ballinamore with a 7.30pm start on Friday evening. I’ll be doing a piece on the Minors tomorrow.
