Charlestown’s fitting tribute to Colm Horkan

It wouldn’t be right to let yesterday’s official opening of the Colm Horkan Memorial Pitch and Walkways pass without mention.

On what was a very big day for Charlestown Sarsfields GAA club, the €1.5 million project, which is dedicated to the late Detective Garda who was slain in the line of duty almost four years ago, was officially dedicated by Taoiseach Simon Harris, at a ceremony attended by a number of national and local dignitaries, along with a big gathering of local people.

Club Chairperson Liam Breheny put it well on the RTÉ news report on the event when he said that simply erecting a plaque for their late teammate and friend wouldn’t have done. Something bigger and more lasting was needed, he said, and the Memorial Pitch and Walkways is the result.

From the pictures and reports I’ve seen about it, the new facility certainly is a fitting tribute to the late Colm Horkan and will keep his memory alive within the community and further afield in the years to come. Well done to everyone who was involved in this inspiring project, which came to triumphant fruition yesterday.

  1. Too true, a fitting tribute to a super person. What a man! A credit to himself and his suffering family. We certainly shall not see his like again. May he rest in peace. He is with good friends. Thanks for being Colm.

  2. Watching it on the news yesterday evening and his poor dad being interviewed, it was clear he had suffered a great loss. But also his pride in the local club’s achievement in providing such a great facility and naming it after his son. Well done to all in Charlestown GAA.
