Club Championship matches are on once again this coming weekend, with action in the Senior, Intermediate and Junior Championships. Here’s a quick run-down on the games taking place on Saturday and Sunday.
First up, the Senior Championship where the concluding round of matches in the four groups take place in order to determine who makes the play-offs and who is set to face a battle to retain Senior status next year.
Here are the SFC ties on this weekend.

In Group 1, Breaffy are already through and another win for them will push Bohola Moy Davitts – who made the knockouts twelve months ago – into a relegation play-off. The second quarter-final spot is up for grabs between Davitts and Kiltane so a win for either of them will seal it. A draw puts Davitts through, by virtue of superior points difference – they’re on +3, Kiltane are on -9.
It’s still all to play for in Group 2. Aghamore have an extremely tough task on their hands as they need a result against Castlebar Mitchels to make the knockout stages, while a bad defeat in that one could push my home club into relegation avoider trouble. A win, meanwhile, for either Ballina or Westport will most likely see the victors through, with Westport’s need that bit greater as they go into this weekend in fourth spot.
Defending champions Ballintubber are already through in Group 3 and if they beat Garrymore they’ll be sure of topping the group and also will have pushed their opponents closer to the relegation trap-door. Hollymount/Carramore are also in peril, as they face Knockmore who are best placed to grab the second quarter-final spot from this group.
Both knockout slot are already taken in Group 4. Ballaghaderreen and Belmullet are already safely through and so their meeting at Ballina on Sunday will simply decide which of them tops the group. Likewise the meeting at Aghamore that afternoon of Charlestown and Claremorris will sort out who avoids the relegation play-offs and who doesn’t.
If, like me, getting to one of these games at the weekend isn’t an option you’ll be delighted to know that Mayo GAA TV is back in action and will be streaming the action from MacHale Park on Saturday. Both the Ballina/Westport game at 4.30pm and the Kiltane/Davitts game at 6pm will be streamed live – details here.
Onto the Intermediate Championship, where the following Round 3 group ties are down for decision this weekend.

Finally, the Junior A Championship has reached the knockout stage, with eight contenders left in the hunt for the Pete McDonnell Cup. The following quarter-final ties in the JFC A Championship are scheduled for Sunday.

Looking forward to it. The double header in HQ Saturday night will be were I’ll end up. Massive chance for Ballina to get into the QF. When you look at the inter county contingent they have they should be getting there. Westport have last year under their belt and will have Colm Moran with another few sessions into his legs. Keegan, Keane, two McLaughlins etc all need to be on form. I’ll side with Westport here with the factor of last year experience under their belts. A draw wouldn’t surprise me.
Davitts v Kiltane is also a massive chance for both teams to get into QF. It’s a tough one to call. Gaughan a massive loss for Kiltane (best of luck to him) but also rumoured Boyle is touch and go after having to get a number of stitches to the head in the Moy Davitts game. I’ll side with Davitts, have some lovely forwards and the ever green McNamara lording it in midfield, one of the best free takers in county along with Lavin and Maye.
Have yet to decide what game I’ll head to on Sunday.
Anybody able to say when the QF’s, SF’s and Final is scheduled? Want to plan ahead if possible.
Andy D
Senior/intermediate QF/Relegation playoff – 21/22 September
Senior/intermediate Semi Final/Relegation final – 5/6 October
Senior/Intermediate final – 19/20 October
If replays – 26/27 October
Great double header in mc hale Park. Those two along with the Charlestown v claremorris clash should be the three thrillers of the weekend. Hard to call a winner in any of those. Only a very brave man or a fool would be doing a treble on those thee matches. Hope to get to all three.
Didn’t comment re AI final. Mostly because of the content of some bitter and begrudging comments here along the lines of, if it was mayo this would be said or if that was a mayo player that would never have happened. Mayo had a successful year, but we are not in the final. We should all be getting over that fact at this stage. The game itself was highly entertaining and we should let the supporters of each enjoy the moment and not begrudge them their day/days out. Personally I hope the replay is just as good and will watch it like the last day with interest only on the football and tactics on the field, and without really being bothered who wins.

This thread will explain all the permutations of the groups so far along with a few other bits and bobs
It’s just been confirmed that Achill have lodged an objection relating to their final round JFC match against Knockmore B, which means that the Junior quarter-final tie between Kilmaine and Westport has had to be postponed. Details on that here: https://twitter.com/mayonewssport/status/1169970165712338944?s=21

We are Mayo – Mayo GAA TV are streaming the two games from MacHale Park today (Ballina v Westport at 4.30pm and Kiltane v Davitts at 6pm). Both are free to view and are being streamed via Facebook. This is the link for it: https://www.facebook.com/143442239063103/posts/3004515476289084?sfns=mo.
Thank you Willie Joe thats great cheers
Poor days worth of football let’s hope tommorow is better
I was at the Ballintubber garrymore match, and got the Westport Ballina , kiltane davitts on Mayo TV, a great service but really all poor enough games. From a Mayo point of view I didn’t see much in terms of emerging talent, possibly brian Murphy Ballintubber but he wasn’t that impressive in the half of football I saw. Westport v poor, have gone back since last season based on tonight’s performance, providing further proof that James Horan is indeed a fine Manager. Looking forward to tomorrow’s games.
Westport very poor. The younger Westport players- based on what we saw today- have a long way to go before they can be considered senior county standard. Crowe seemed to play well for Garry. He definitely deserves at least three full games in league next year to see is he good enough.
Does anybody know who’s playing who In the quarter finals and play offs or is there a draw
Any inside forward stand out in Mayo club championship today?
Ballinas inside forward line very good chris
Was at the Ballina Westport game.Mikey Murray ,Keith Tighe ,Conor McStay and Jack Irwin all very impressive for Ballina today Treacy and Regan were very quite from play, Clarkie done really well in goal as usual pulled of 2 goalbound saves and got off alot of his short kickouts ,still a good year or 2 left in him for Inter County if he can improve his kicking game for Mayo.
Westport for me were very really dissapointing didnt seem up for this game at all, Fionn McDonagh mixes the good and the bad, tends to carry the ball into contact too often and his shooting can be erratic, but has alot to work with serious pace and skill, Mike Murray for Ballina has alot of ability and can see why Horan called him in, probably needs more conditioning and to tidy up on things in his game to move to the next level, but that will hopefully come in time. These 2 players need another full season of National League games.
Caolan Crowe from garrymore must be at least 30 years old at this stage. Surely that ship has sailed regarding intercounty football? That’s not being disrespectful to the lad either, an excellent club player for many years but hard to see a player of that age profile who was involved with the Mayo squad before suddenly making the improvement necessary to bridge the gap between club and intercounty in 2020? The same applies for Neil Douglas of castlebar too. Disappointing to hear Westport have gone backwards. What about Davitts, they had a good win, wonder did anyone put their hand up in that game? Keen to hear how the belmullet vs ballagh game goes too, a number of fringe county players involved there.
Conor McStay looks to have natural inside forward skill. He has a sharp sidestep (So did his Father and Uncle). He won a lot of ball and either laid it off or scored.
Evan Ronane similar and he looks to have got bigger and more powerful.
Larry duff, crowe is an excellent footballer who seems to be overlooked by this and previous management. He had a great game against mcbrearty inthe league in Donegal and against cillian yesterday, but Cafferkey is still taking his place in the squad. Crowe is a perfect full back material, not Harrison
Was at Mitchel’s v aghamore last evening, Conor Kilkenny was very good, worth a look at county level. Gavin Durcan looked good when he came on, a big guy, scored a good point, another long range effort just wide, kept the ball well, should be a starter for Mitchel’s, will be a county player in the next two years.
Any promising players play well today ?
Ciaran Gavin seemed to have a good game yesterday for Tubber. He impressed me last year too in a few games. Gary Boylan with 8 points today 3 from play with David Drake on him. He looks an exciting player. Will defo see him with Mayo during the FBD at least. QF is where a few lads can stand up and make a name for themselves. High pressured games and will be taken notice off if they perform well.
Thanks to Mayo TV watched the double header from McHale park.
The standard of play in both games I felt was poor. No intensity or structure for the most part.
The young guns on those teams need developing and conditioning. I was particularly looking for potential full backs and full forwards for the county going forward but not visible on this occasion. Hopefully the quarter finals will light up the competition and the cream to come to the top.
Good luck to all the teams
According to the GAA show on Ballina community radio yesterday there has been a numbers of players let go out of the Mayo Senior panel and 6 players have been brought in for training.
James Stretton Claremorris
Liam Irwin Breaffy
Ryan O’Donoghue Belmullet
Gary Boylan Belmullet
Paul Towey Charlestown
Brian Murphy Ballintubber
can anyone tell me if there has to be a draw for quarter finals or do they know allready
Chris Kelly I wouldn’t have thought the Mayo team/panel are back training yet collectively anyway? Don’t you hate to wait a few months after getting knocked out of the champions, but I’d welcome those lads mentioned being brought into the panel
There be a draw Tuesday at 8.
Surprised Darren McHale not been called in very solid at club level and sticks out in ganes he plays. Gave S.Coen plenty think about yesterday as Well.
thanks gizmobobs i like the name
Would like to have seen Jack Reilly from Charlestown given a chance one of a very few players who can kick scores of either foot in the County, Other forwards worth a look at would be Aidan Orme and Peter Naughton of Knockmore, Kuba Callaghan of Ballagh, and Evan O’Brien of Ballinrobe. Horan seems to have lost faith in Neil Douglas, even though hes still the top club forward in the County on his day.
Eddie Doran, Seamus Cunniffe, David Kenny, Marcus Park, Rory Brickenden and Cathal Horan all worth a look at in defence particularly our full back line were we have very little cover.
We need a solution to a 3rd choice Goalie whether thats Michael Schlingermann, Rory Byrne ,Paddy O’Malley or Matty Flanagan.
Delighted to see Liam Irwin and Gary Boylan getting there chance with Mayo.
