The group stages in this year’s Mayo club football Championships were concluded last weekend while this coming weekend sees the quarter-finals played out in the Senior, Intermediate and Junior Championships. With the races for the Moclair, Sweeney and McDonnell Cups now hotting up nicely, in this episode of the Mayo News football podcast we review the action from last weekend and look forward to the start of the knockouts.
Mayo News sports editor Mike Finnerty hosts this episode of the podcast and he’s joined in studio by his Mayo News colleagues Edwin McGreal and Ger Flanagan as together they look back on all the weekend’s action and set the scene for the quarter-finals. Special guest on this episode is Ardagh manager Sean Carey, the former Kiltane player and Mayo selector, with whom Mike met up following Ardagh’s JFC clash with Eastern Gaels.

Thanks everyone and thanks Willie Joe for the Blog.
Thanks Ah Ref. Interesting preview of Knockmore Tubber. Do agree that if there is no Cillian then Knockmore have more forward threats.
Interesting stats there Gooch.
Apart from Fergal Boland there is an obvious absence of scores from play from our inter county players in the senior championship. Jason Doc and Darren Coen are showing up albeit at a lower level in Intermediate. I would have expected a bigger return from players of inter county standard.
Maybe the gap between county and Mayo senior club is narrowing??
You have to take into account that county players are marked men in the club championship. So it’s not a given that they will put up big scores. Look at Tommy Conroy for example. In the Neale’s 3 games so far, I think he’s been marked by Caolan Crowe, Eoin O’Donoghue and David Drake. 3 backs that are well up to division 1 NFL standard. Paul Towey gets the same attention in every Charlestown game, Cillian for Ballintubber etc.
I would say the club championship is showing us major transition is at our door knocking.
Keith Higgins, Donal Vaughan, Cillian O’Connor, Ger Cafferkey (not on panel), Chris Barrett, Brendan Harrison, all have had injuries. Mileage has caught up on the players there since 2011.
I think at this point a Mayo u26 team would beat a Mayo over 26 team and it wouldn’t be close. We will build our team for the next five years around Paddy Durcan, Diarmuid O’Connor, Matthew Ruane, Stephen Coen, Eoin O’Donoghue that age brackat of players.
Then young players like Mark Moran, Paul Towey and Tommy Conroy.
An interesting player is Dylan Prendergast Louisburgh. He was the best forward underage in Oisin Mullens age group u20 this year. He’s scoring heavily and he has physical power and pace.
Alot of interesting information on Google re Croke Park and the Dublin Diocese, then again why am I not too surprised.
Alot coming out in the open now since Golfgate.
Just had a listen there @Ah Ref .. Excellent stuff . Keep up the good work !!
Cheers @myball we have been blown away with the reaction of these 2 podcasts are really enjoying them and cant wait for more, appreciate the kind words .
Have any players impressed enough to merit a phone call from James Horan?
1-18 from Peter naughton. Definitely has to be called in
Dylan Prendergast is still in the Connacht setup playing underage for Connacht and currently playing AIL with Ballina RFC. He is only available to Louisburg cause of the covid lockdown and as far as I know will be back playing Rugby in January with Ballina and Connacht and is close to a full contract with Connacht but maybe if Rugby stays behind closed doors and with reduced budgets he might throw his hat back in with football full time??
Mighty stuff Ah Ref. I use Castbox for my podcasts, are your podcasts on there?
You’ll know this tune very well no doubt! And then the trumpet tune, love it!

Interesting on the scoring stats from play. We will hopefully only have one or two free takers.
Any word on some of the big names in junior such as Kevin Kennelly and James Carr.
Went to Elverys to buy a Mayo Lgfa jersey for my daughter as none of right size on line . Buck in shop made a call and said new Mayo Jersey being released but they are holding back on it until they see if inter county championship goes ahead . Let’s hope it does but we may enjoy our club football while we have it . It’s the back bone of the Gaa and always will be .
Couldn’t agree more’my ball. This break in the inter county scene is doin wonders for club football in mayo and if it’s done right in the future will definitely improve the county setup. We should forget about inter county this year and give the club football it’s time. It’s a win win
Well Mayo88 my interest was piqued and I went off to read up on the Gaa & Dublin Archdiocese deal to sell a 19 acre site in Drumcondra for a price tag of 100million euro for 1,200 apartments (reported in Irish Independent 09/06/2019). Surely they could distribute the profits to the clubs all over country and take over the debt of McHale Park. It is so maddening and frustrating that all this money is being drained away that should be going into underage development and our clubs own grounds, etc.
The Gaa has are now into development of sites and Apartments, so much for the County Boards worrying and scraping to pay off their debts.
I can see now why the Dublin Senior team are as close to Professional of any amateur team I have ever witnessed.
Ye are a mine of information – here we are in the situation where CB finances are in dire straits – D. Butler said they dont have two ha’pennies to rub together. The debt repayments for years to come. All the money that Croke Park have. We filled Croke Park and other stadiums for years. How are we going to compete with the Dubs in years to come?? Could any local journalists (or anyone) highlight all this…
Lads ye need to fully read up that deal before making accusations and coming to inaccurate conclusions.

I know the tune well. Giddy listening to it
Thanks Ah Ref, found you on castbox.
Love your intro tune, quality
Really looking forward to all the games this weekend. Will be really interesting to see how the games will go. Could be some big shocks I think. I listened to the “Ah ref” podcast preview show and I have to say I was really impressed with the knowledge shown about all levels from Senior, intermediate and Junior. These men know their football but they still have a long way to go to catch up to the high standards set by @willie Joe, Edwin Mcgreal and Rob Murphy. These men are a different level I think anyways. I always enjoy listening to their opinions on Mayo football. Hopefully we have a good weekend of football. I know I’ll be tuning into all the games.
Great stuff there from Mayo Gooch and Ah Ref.
Paul Towey caught my eye last week – but he got very little ball so he won’t feature much at that rate. Feed him and he’ll thrive I would say. Mikey Murray and Ciarán Tracey also looked sharp for Ballina when it really counted. I only saw most of the second half of the Ballina game so Peter Naughton didn’t feature much, but still that’s impressive scoring as you point out Mayo 36.
