The seniors have been getting plenty of attention over the last while but the focus switches back to the juniors this coming weekend, as the lads face Sligo in the Connacht final at Fr. O’Hara Park in Charlestown on Friday (throw-in 7.30 pm). On their way to the final, John Kelly’s charges overcame Leitrim and Roscommon but Friday’s decider will need to involve a definite gear shift as the Yeatsmen are the reigning Connacht and All-Ireland champions at this level. This means that, unusually, we’ll be ranked as underdogs facing into a provincial final against Sligo but, as last Sunday over in Ruislip showed fairly clearly, the days of our taking things for granted in terms of where we stand in the pecking order are well and truly over.
Mayo GAA’s excellent Twitter service will be providing updates from the match in Charlestown on Friday evening and more on the game can be found in this Mayo News interview with Michael Conroy who is now a key member of the junior side.
UPDATE: The Western People now have a comprehensive preview of the match on their site – available here.
Conroy should be back on the senior panel…should be plenty of vacancies soon.
best of luck to the islandeady lads on Friday. Ollie feeney, Vinny Feeney and Peter Collins. Ollie Feeney is another lad along with Conroy that could be called up to the squad.
