Details for tomorrow’s charity match

As most of you will no doubt be aware by now, the venue and time for tomorrow’s Mayo GAA charity match, in aid of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association, was altered earlier today, in light of the poor weather forecast for tomorrow.

The match is now confirmed for the Dome at the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence. Throw-in is at the later time of 2.30pm.

Tickets for the game – which, by the looks of it, are still available, despite the reduced capacity in the Dome – may be purchased online (here). Mayo GAA TV are also streaming the game live and the link for this (match pass purchase required) is here.

We’ll be covering the match on the podcast too. We’ll have a Final Whistle pod from the Dome up on Patreon shortly after it’s over and I’ll have a match report (of sorts) here on the blog afterwards as well.

A bit earlier on today, details of the Club All-Star team and subs for tomorrow’s game were announced. Four of the starting fifteen – Sam Callinan, Jack Carney, Bob Tuohy and Aidan O’Shea – are county players while two more, Conor O’Shea and Evan Regan, used to be.

The full Club All-Star match-day panel for tomorrow is as follows:

Mayo Club All-Stars v Mayo XV, 30/12/2023: Luke Jennings (Ballinrobe); Aaron Timlin (Knockmore), Basil McLeod (Louisburgh), Conor Beirne (Breaffy); Sam Callinan (Ballina Stephenites), Stephen Staunton (Kilmeena), Fenton Kelly (Davitts); Jack Carney (Kilmeena), Conor O’Shea (Breaffy); Bob Tuohy (Castlebar Mitchels), Ethan Henry (Mayo Gaels), Diarmuid Duffy (Ballinrobe); Evan Regan (Ballina Stephenites), Aidan O’Shea (Breaffy, captain), Luke Feeney (Ballina Stephenites). Subs: Peter Basquille (Castlebar Mitchels), John MacMonagle (Castlebar Mitchels), Liam Maloney (Cill Chomáin), Conor O’Donoghue (Charlestown Sarsfields), Liam Burke (Ballinrobe), Darragh Keaveney (Kilmeena), Kevin Quinn (Ballinrobe), Brian Reape (Bohola Moy Davitts), Mark Noone (Lahardane MacHales), Caolach Halligan (Kilmeena), Evan O’Brien (Ballinrobe).

There’s no word as yet on what the Mayo selection is for tomorrow’s game, though the hope is that it’ll be a strong one. The fact that the game is taking place in the Dome obviously reduces its benefit in terms of match practice – not least given that next month’s FBD games are also set to be played in the Dome – but it needs to be borne in mind that the main purpose of tomorrow’s contest is that it’s a charity fundraiser so hopefully there’ll still be a good turnout for it.

UPDATE: The Mayo selection for tomorrow has now been named as well. Here it is:

Mayo XV v Mayo Club All-Stars, 30/12/2023: Rob Hennelly (Raheny); Ciaran Boland (Ballina Stephenites), Rory Brickenden (Westport), Ruairí Keane (Mayo Gaels); Tomás Fahey (Kilmaine), Conor Hunt (Aghamore), Eoghan McLaughlin (Westport); Jordan Flynn (Crossmolina Deel Rovers), Donnacha McHugh (Castlebar Mitchels); Conor Reid (Bohola Moy Davitts), Frank Irwin (Ballina Stephenites), Tom O’Flaherty (Aghamore); Conor McStay (Ballina Stephenites), Tommy Conroy (The Neale, captain), Paul Towey (Charlestown Sarsfields). Subs: David Dolan (Balla), Eoin O’Donoghue (Belmullet), Aaron McDonnell (Ballinrobe), Seán Morahan (Castlebar Mitchels), Paddy Durcan (Castlebar Mitchels), Conal Dawson (Westport), Cillian O’Connor (Ballintubber), Ryan O’Donoghue (Belmullet), Kuba Callaghan (Ballaghaderreen).

  1. After seeing both lineups it should be a really good game, the all star team looks a good bit stronger but the bench for mayo looks really good, hopefully a enjoyable open game for a great cause too.

  2. Looking like it could be an evenly contested game with big characters on both sides. Like to see how tomas Fahey gets on at wingback he’s a pacey player who can carry the ball well and set up scores and is capable of taking a score himself. Delighted to see eoin o Donoghue back and hopefully he can kick on from a couple of years ago.

  3. A lovely surprise to see Eoin O Donahue named. Didn’t know he was back. Could be a great addition.

  4. Yes great to Eoin O Donahue back I didn’t know he was back either.. He will hopefully be great plus to us.. Looks like mcstay & Co have been scouting hopeful new players to.. Feeling more optimistic about our season now!

  5. WJ I think Conor O’Shea is a county senior player again, as is Fergal Boland and it seems Eoin O’D. Great to see Eoin back, could be a big addition to the defense. Looking forward to an entertaining game, in a great venue, for the most worthy of causes.

  6. Martin Carney will likely be most surprised with that Mayo starting team as in his column last week he had Rob Hennelly retired.

  7. Great to see Eoin O D, Rory Brickendon, Donnacha McH return. Hope Cillian plays & nobody sustains any injuries. Thanks for dedictating to Mayo again lads.

  8. Question…if u buy the match on Mayo tv can u watch it later in the day or can you only watch it live??

  9. Entertaining game so far bob touhy is such an exciting player.. Ciliian O Connor back on form, brickendan made some great runs.. Paul towey is really good maybe he’s improved enough for county this year?

Evan Reagan looks good but still have my doubts for county for him..

Aido missed two easy enough frees…

People say reape has some oor kick outs hennelly had one or two loose kick outs…

  10. @Mayonaze

I could very well be confusing my streaming services; but iirc from last year – your initial purchase gets you the live stream, and I think you can rewatch over the following week. After that week though you have to purchase it a second time to view it again and can from that second view it whenever you want forever.

I can’t recall which of the streaming services this was though; Mayo tv, Connacht tv (for the FBD) or gaago (where I initially felt it out by purchasing individual games but bought the season membership at some point)

  11. Run out to burn the dirty diesel off. Can’t read much if anything out of those indoor games especially that one with little or no defending going on. Hopefully good money raised for the charity.

  12. Missed almost the entire match, but given the good cause, I paid for the last ten or so minutes, even though I couldn’t watch it properly.

    * Really curious on where the earlier goals came from; I would have had more goals from the All Stars starting forwards – although with the game moved to the Dome, Mayo did have some nippy forwards.

    * Happy that the Mayo selection were able to finish the stronger; we are prepping for 70 minute games after all.

    * Brickenden and Irwin got 70 minutes, and appear to have been influential.

    * Caught a glimpse of Kuba Callaghan, and he looks in excellent physical condition; there was a concern that individually the tail end of our squad was struggling to reach the reach the required level – rather than putting pressure on the guys ahead – Kuba looks like a guy who could potentially push for a matchday place, and hopefully there are a few more around.

    * Indoor football appears to showing well again today in the entertainment stakes. Definitely more suited to shorter games. – I’d suggest introducing the lady’s football time management system, and then start playing around with half lengths; but something more like snooker, where instead of two halves, you have 10 minute “frames” which you can vary depending on the context.

  13. @frost the hammer Paul towey got a couple of goals I think. Kuba callaghan got one and paddy durcan and eoghan mcghloulin got one to..

Yes can’t tell much but there is definetly things to be more optimistic then negative!

  14. Great entertainment today and score taking . Good run out for all lads concerned . Little or no contact or hard tackling as expected given its early season and indoor etc . Plenty to look forward to

  15. Did Mayo or are Mayo having a freindly with Donegal in Convoy over this weekend, anyone know about it.

  16. @culmore no we didn’t play a challenge game against donegal as far as I know donegal played against letrim in a challenge.
