Early team news for Sunday

The Mayo News has some early-in-the-week information on who might or might not feature for us in Sunday’s shit-or-bust inconsequential league match with Monaghan at Iniskeen (throw-in 2.30 pm).

As was reported by Hogan Stand earlier on today, Aidan O’Shea is out of Sunday’s match, having hurt (but not broken) his thumb against Cork.  Tom Cunniffe, who was withdrawn at half-time the last day, is also likely to miss out as is Alan Dillon who went off late in the Cork game.  The former has a hamstring injury and the latter has too, with a dead leg problem for good measure. Ronan McGarrity definitely won’t be back in the fray either, as it’ll take him another four to six weeks to recover from the achilles tendon problem he has.  Likewise, Donal Vaughan, Trevor Howley and Kevin Dolan are all still ruled out due to their various ailments.

In that Mayo News report, it’s stated that we’re likely to see names such as Barry Moran, Seamus O’Shea, Ronan Rochford, Ruaidhrí O’Connor, James Burke and Cathal Hallinan coming into the reckoning.  That’s until Barry trips over the cat and does his back in or whatever.

The same report also states that the current squad – which has been fairly open-ended since the start of the FBD – is set to be “trimmed” next week ahead of the championship.

In other news, the Indo has a report on last night’s County Board meeting where the Strategic Action Plan was discussed and where it was agreed that it would be discussed some more next month.  At some point, the Board has to decide whether or not to go with the recommendations in the Action Plan (or variants on them) but that particular can has, for now, been kicked a bit further down the road.

Next (with thanks to @clubmayo for pointing this out on Twitter the other day), what GAA scheduling genius decided that it made sense for our hurlers to play Monaghan in a Division 3B league match at Clones at 2.30 pm on Sunday when – you’ve guessed it – the footballers will, at exactly the same time, be taking on the Farney lads in our Division One league encounter at Iniskeen?  What’s wrong with the Scheduling Ogre?  Hasn’t it heard that it’s possible to have double-headers up in the land of the drumlins?

Finally, our ref for Sunday’s match (the football one) is Eddie Kinsella from Laois.  I thought that name rang a bell and so I did some digging. I was right, that was him and what a day that was for us.

  1. Just clicked on the link and some of the comments made me smile… “In 3 – 5 years time Sam will be a realistic possibility ” and “I’d say Ray’s lads have a better chance than Barack of landing the big prize!”…if we knew then what we know now… I am only surprised no one said “put your money into Anglo shares!!!”
