Mayo’s U17s got their Connacht Championship campaign going in fine style at James Stephens Park this evening, as they beat Leitrim in Round 1 by 2-16 to 0-6. Second half goals from Ronan Clarke (Mayo’s top scorer on the evening) and Diarmuid Duffy helped the home team pull away to win by sixteen points at the finish.
The margin was much closer at half-time, at which stage our lads led by 0-9 to 0-2 and the gap was still only seven points when Leitrim lost Eoghan Ridge to a red card with 12 minutes to go. That prompted a late scoring surge from Mayo, including the two goals, which saw them run out handsome winners.
That’s all the detail I have on the game, I’m afraid – I was driving across the country this evening while it was in progress so wasn’t able to watch it or follow the action as it unfolded. The Connaught Telegraph has a match report online, however, the link to which is here.
Next up for the U17s is an away clash with Roscommon. That’s on this night week.
Well done to the U17.Hopefully we go well in that grade this year.
