This is just a quick pre-match one, which kinda needs to be quick as there’s less than three hours to go now ’till throw-in at Celtic Park. I’m missing out on this one and, to be honest, I’ll only catch the action today in snatches as I have the delights of an U12 girls match to go myself to this afternoon.
All this means that what I have to say post-match today will be brief (no audio for this one, I’m afraid) though once all those of you who do get to the game return to base you’ll be able to colour in the details. And I promise not to wipe the comments from the face of the earth this time round.
Best of luck to the lads today – a win would leave us in a great place in Division One and so it’s definitely worth going for the right result with everything we’ve got. And what we’ve got should, I think, be enough to secure the spoils up North this afternoon.
UPDATE: The Mayo Advertiser has just tweeted our subs lists for today, which reads as follows: David Clarke (Ballina Stephenites), Darren McHugh (Hollymount/Carramore), David Drake (Ballaghaderreen), Brendan Harrison (Aghamore), Donal Vaughan (Ballinrobe), Barry Moran (Castlebar Mitchels), Conor O’Shea (Breaffy), Neil Douglas (Castlebar Mitchels), Alan Dillon (Ballintubber), Alan Freeman (Aghamore), Mikey Sweeney Kiltane.
Best of luck to our lads today. This is going to be a tough one and it would be fantastic to get something out of this game. Expect this to be as frustrating as the Tyrone game given the size and physicality of the Derry squad. This will be a day for the big men so if Aido is operating around the square today it will give us a target man if the blanket defense is in full flight! Glad to see Conor O’Shea and Brendan Harrison also named in the subs.
45 I predict a draw????
Ill raise a mug a tae and wish Mayo all the best today. Will we be wearing the new jersey ?
Starting to show a bit of depth on our bench which will only get stronger as more lads come back from injury.
Hopefully a win today and can’t wait to face a Dublin team fighting to gain points and safety
Go on Mayo
Am on a flight with wifi – does anyone know is the game online anywhere?
There’s live commentary on Midwest and there’ll no doubt be blow-by-blow score updates on Twitter.
If Kirby and Forde can perform today that will be huge. We’ve never entered the summer with more than a handful of taller players. In any era of Gaelic Football height is such a valuable thing n you can’t manufacture it in thr gym.
Cunniffe gone out on Lynch!! The best suited to him. Jese Jason Doherty fair play 15 seconds a score.
Ronaldson proving his ability today. Probably our only forward with that kinda soccer smarts to just knee the ball home. Crucial goal.
At last Mayo prevail in a tight game – hopefully a sign of things to come !
A real tight spot up in derry today and mayo managed to get through. We sometimes say things dont go our way but a few decisions went our way today. Messy enough stuff and mayo really need to make leads count and kick on but they didn’t panic and stayed focused. Either way, its two points for mayo and four on the road with two more home games to go so things look good. Did i mention that mayo winning makes me very, very happy?
Well done to Mayo, not easy on the heart. 2 very valuable points, well done to mike Sweeney, a clinical bucko if ever there was one.
Well done today. An absolutely crucial 2 points and also good to win close game. Hit 1 2 on the spin after they had got back level. Well done to Mid West. .They get a lot of grief here but provide commentary for us and let us know how we are doing. RTE website is brutal slow and one or two other websites which advertise instant updates are way behind. Great service from Mayo gaa twitter as well so thanks to them also.
Great win, we got the two points and we learned a lot.
We need to run our bench earlier.
Forde was on a few balls and had a few passes. The game seemed to pass Kirby by.
Ronaldson had five attempts resulted in 1-2, had a couple of completed passes as well. Himself and Mike Sweeney have that bit of goal scoring accuracy n ability to react quick.
McGloughlin, Cafferkey, Cillian and Keegan all fairly quiet for established senior players. A day like today shows me we need someone like Keegan given a new lease of life at midfield. We needed a lot more running threat to unsettle Derry more. Think of a freed up Keegan helping out his half back line n then bombing forward to offer options to AOS off the shoulder. AOS is an option on our kickout anyways. We need more threat from the midfielder who supports SOS.
BTW credit to Barry Moran for setting up Mikey Sweeney and winning a crucial kickout.
However yet again I thought at times the blankets counter attack was goin from defence to our 30 too easily.
It was a great win up in Derry especially given the fact that we showed some real determination today
Just have the feeling this win could be worth far more than two points, especially as we nearly blew it. A tough place to go and win a tight game.
Willie Joe,, You told us last year in the run up to the Club final how conflicted you were between the Mayo Champs and Vincent’s. How will it be when those youngsters of yours are playing for the Dubs against Mayo? Just suggesting you prepare yourself.
