Hurlers through to Rackard Cup final

The big match at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park wasn’t the only one involving the county today. There were three other Mayo games on, which resulted in a win, a draw and a loss. Let’s have a quick rundown on these three results.

The draw occurred at Dr Hyde Park where the county’s Senior hurlers were in action against Roscommon in the Rackard Cup. The Rossies needed to win to make the final whereas our lads just needed the draw.

By the sounds of it this was a game we both should have won but could have lost. We were eight up with twenty minutes to go but the home side came storming back into it and, with the game level in injury time, they then missed a free to win it.

The draw means we finished level on points with Roscommon but ahead of them on scoring difference. We now go forward to meet Donegal in the Rackard Cup final.

Also heading for a national final at the county’s U17 hurlers. They too enjoyed victory over Roscommon today, as they came out on top after extra time in the Celtic Challenge semi-final at Athleague, which finished 2-20 to 2-17 for the Green and Red.

In the Connacht LGFA Minor A final, meanwhile, Mayo were edged out by Galway after a cracking game that saw our girls overturn a fourteen-point deficit to lead by two, only to concede a goal at the death. Galway won it by 3-11 to 2-12.
