So it’s here. A new year has dawned and with it a whole new decade. Welcome to the Roaring Twenties, 21st Century style.
From a footballing perspective, the start of a new year is always the moment where the focus turns away from what happened over the previous twelve months and starts to zero in instead on what’s up ahead. I think the vast bulk of Mayo supporters will concur when I say that this shift in focus for us is one we all need at this stage.
In twelve days time, the first shots will be fired in our 2020 footballing year when we face Padraig Joyce’s Galway in a tasty pre-season FBD joust at MacHale Park. Then, before the month is out, the defence of our National League title will have begun.
The on-field fun is now, finally, just around the corner. Here’s hoping that 2020 will be a year to remember for us for all the right reasons. Happy New Year to all.
To you W J and your family and everybody else have a 2020 that you wish for. I sincerely hope we will win Sam e few times over the next 10 years. I hope every will have the health to enjoy what the year brings. Our first job is to wish Kilmaine and Tooreen the very best
Happy New Year WJ
Hon Mayo
Anyone know if our u20s are playing in any of the pre-championship leagues in January? Can’t find any fixtures for them
I think u20s are playing on saturday, anyone know where and what time.
Roscommon v Mayo U20 league game is played Saturday in Castlerea at 2pm. Other games the following Saturdays at home to Derry and Donegal venues tbc
I have a note on my phone since before Christmas for an U20 game v Roscommon on Saturday. No time or venue but knowing the Rossies it will probably be in Kiltoom, unless they have somewhere further away. At this time of year predicting venues is hazardous because of the weather but given what we’ve had recently there should be no reason for late changes. On Sat 11th it’s v Derry at home and on 18th it’s v Donegal also at home. No times or venues either. The final is set for Sat 25th, the day we open our league campaign away to Donegal.
Thanks folks, just another example just how great this blog is, being able to share knowledge like that.
Happy New Year WJ and the same to all of you with red and green blood!
Delighted to hear the blog will live on. Combined with the podcasts it is a fantastic resource for us supporters.
Best of luck with the new job and looking forward to seeing you at matches in the coming year. I might even shake your hand the next time I see you!
Thanks all for the updates.
2020 here we go!
I like the look of the potential Mayo u20 squad this year. One thing is they will have a lot of experienced players in their final year.
Jamie McNicholas, Basil McLeod, Rory Brickendon, Jackie Coyne, Oisin Mullen, Aaron McDonnell, David McBrien, Ciaran Gavin, Padraig McLoughlin, Paul Towey, Kuba Callaghan, John Gallagher, Pat Lambert, Cillian Golden.
Did Oisín Mullen play for mayo minors.
Oisin Mullen was injured his minor year u17.
Some good talent named there JP. I think Eoghan McLaughlin still u20 too. A serious athlete. Some good talent there. I think Mayo seniors might be playing NUIG in a challenge this weekend but not a 100% sure. Happy New year to all!
Eoghan McLoughlin is overage. His final year u20 was last year. He is a prospect for senior in my view. He is a top athlete as you mentioned.
Happy new year WJ, and all contributors to the blog. Delighted WJ has decided to continue the blog, really appreciate all you do for us Mayo supporters. If anybody hears any word on Mayo NUIG match, please update here, as Id love to get to a Mayo game this wend, will try to make Castlebar on Sat to see the u20s.
Thanks for that JP, will hopefully get to the u20 game anyways to see what other lads are on the panel. An exciting time of year that’s for sure.
It sure will be interesting to see how our u20’s go this year. There were a lot of players discussed and arguably ‘talked up’ ahead of championship last year. Anyone who was unfortunate enough to have been at the u20 match v Galway will have been wondering what all the talk was about! The lack of structure, abysmal basic skills leading to a very high unforced error/turnover count as well as an ability to score was dreadful. Thankfully our u17s had been quite the opposite in almost every capacity a week beforehand and our seniors won in Limerick. These fine results masked what really was a very poor performance on the pitch and on the line.
Its a big year for the management team I believe and for any of the team who played in tuam last summer and are still underage.
Inisboffin that u20 game is in castlerea.
Happy New Year WJ and family! Looking forward to 2020 following the green and red!
