It’s GMIT next for us in the FBD

It’s like the buses – you wait four long months for a match (if you ignore that jaunt to New York for the FBD World Series final in October) and then two come along together. This Sunday, the lads play their second match in the FBD League and this weekend’s opponents are GMIT with the match set for Ballinrobe with a 2pm throw-in. We’ve another Sligo ref for this one – let’s hope that TJ Keaveney isn’t as nannyish as Michael Duffy was at Ballyhaunis last weekend.

We had an easy enough time against GMIT in last year’s FBD – that was the night that Cillian O’Connor racked up 1-6 for us on his inter-county debut – but they got off to a fairly good start in this year’s competition when they held Roscommon to a draw last Sunday at Ballyforan. Indeed, but for a last-minute equalising free for the Rossies the students would have handed Des Newton his first defeat as Roscommon manager at the first time of asking in that one.

Looking at that team line-up in the match report linked above, I don’t recognise many of those GMIT lads. Their man man, centre-forward Johnny Ryan, is, I know, from Galway but I don’t see any Mayo lads in there (there’s a Prenty there – is he one?) apart from Aidan Walsh who came on as a sub in that match and scored two points from frees.

We haven’t named our team for Sunday yet but sure it’s early days yet. Once we do so I’ll stick up the details here.

  1. There’s a few Mayo lads on that GMIT team WJ. Brendan Walsh the goalkeeper is of Ballintubber, Niall Prenty, you are right, is a Mayo man. Son of John, the Connacht Council Secretary. Of the subs, there’s Aidan Walsh from Mitchels and I’m pretty sure D Durkan would be Darren Durkan from Parke, who played minor in 2010.
