A bit like the lads, the ladies had to come through quite a battle before they got past Westmeath in this year’s championship. In this afternoon’s LGFA All-Ireland quarter-final at Pearse Park in Longford the Mayo girls eventually won through on a scoreline of 2-10 to 1-11.
No more than Waterloo, this afternoon’s encounter with the Lake County was a close run thing. Our girls led pretty much all the way but they were never able to shake off the tough challenge presented by Westmeath. A late Westmeath goal left the tie in the balance but an even later point from Niamh Kelly steered the Green and Red girls home.
The win sends the ladies forward, for the first time in seven years, to the All-Ireland semi-finals. There they’re scheduled to meet Dublin, who today ended Donegal’s hopes of championship glory in the day’s other quarter-final tie.
well done girls, could something really good be brewing?
The Mayo women are extraordinarary. They are not just good footballers …….they exhibit what is best in character and stamina. They achieve way beyond the normal and they do it without fuss and with determination. I love Mayo women. I know ……..I married one and I know the strength of character they show while pandering to the egos of men. While we have these women there is hope for the men. Mna Mhuigheo Abu.
Cora Staunton deserves one more medal . As do all of that team . They were good today just slaked a lot in the second half.
great job …bate them dubs
Well done to the Mayo ladies, lets go & beat the Dubs now
Well done Mayo women, back on the road to the big time. It’s in them to beat what is a very good ‘Jackeens’ team.
Well done folks. We just keep producing them in Mayo. Cora is probably the best player we ever produced
Best ladies player of all time I would suggest. If we could only get herself and Ciaran Mac together 🙂
Well done to the Mayo Ladies yet again. This team is making huge strides and a big test lies ahead against a very good Dublin team. But these women will not be found wanting!
Congrats to Frank and his backroom team as well – they are building something special this year. Bring on the Dubs!
Yea – the Mayo ladies will have their work cut out in the next encounter. This Dublin
