Ladies secure morale-boosting draw

Playing away from home this afternoon against high-flying Kerry in Round 4 of the LGFA NFL Division One, the Mayo ladies weren’t given too much of a chance of coming away from Fitzgerald Stadium with any tangible reward. They confounded the odds, however, by claiming an 0-8 apiece draw and earn a precious League point, one that might prove vital when the final standings are decided.

We made two changes to our named team for this game. Erin Murray and Sinéad Cafferky made their first appearances of the year, replacing Jenna Mortimer and Danielle Caldwell respectively.

Kerry got off to a fast start. They bagged the first three points of the game, all from play inside the opening six minutes, the first two from Anna Galvin and the third from Niamh Ní Chonchúir.

We finally got a toe-hold in the contest when Maria Cannon opened our account from a free. She got another point soon after and she also got our equalising third one, both of these latter scores coming from play.

Sinéad Cafferky then marked her return to the fray for 2024 by edging us in front for the first and only time this afternoon. That score was cancelled out on the stroke of half-time by Amy Harrington to leave it all square at four each at the break.

Niamh Carmody put Kerry back in front with the first point of the second half. Maria Cannon cancelled that one out with a free.

The Kingdom then, as they’d done in the first half, put on a bit of a spurt. They scored three points without reply, the first from Emma Dineen and the other two from Louis Ní Mhuircheartaigh, the first of these from a free.

There was still over ten minutes left to play, however, and in that time the visitors clawed their way back to claim a deserved share of the spoils at the finish. They did so with points from two points from Sinéad Walsh, bookending a free from Maria Cannon, as this late Mayo flourish earned Liam McHale’s team a morale-boosting draw.

Nest up for the Mayo women is another trip down south, this time to face Cork. That game is scheduled for Sunday, 3rd March.

Finally, congrats to the Mayo LGFA U14s, who, managed by Sinéad Stagg, enjoyed a win over Kerry down in the Kingdom this afternoon. Well done to them.
