The start of another year of competitive football action starts this weekend with Mayo’s defence of their National Football League title getting underway with a tough away fixture against Donegal on Saturday evening. Ahead of this opening round clash at MacCumhaill Park in Ballybofey the Mayo News football podcast begins its 2020 League coverage with a preview of the spring competition.
Rob Murphy and I throw the ball in for this League preview episode. Rob then sits down with former Mayo manager and current Donegal coach Stephen Rochford for a discussion that covers the new football rules and where Donegal are at ahead of the start of this year’s League campaign.
Next up, Rob chats with Mayo News analyst Billy Joe Padden about Mayo’s prospects in Division One this year. Finally we go over to Mayo News HQ to get a news update from Mike Finnerty, Edwin McGreal and Ger Flanagan, including the latest on current injuries in the Mayo camp.
This latest episode of the Mayo News football podcast is now online and is available to listen to on iTunes, SoundCloud, Spotify and Podomatic. You can also listen to it directly on the Mayo News website as well as here on the blog using the SoundCloud player below or the one on the panel on the right.
Good podcast I think Donegal Will have a little bit to much for us hope I am worng
Yeah im also thinking Donegal will beat us Saturday. A lot of players missing. I always say the league is about staying up, and trying as many new players as possible. But i think we’ll really struggle to stay up this year. Meath and Monaghan away will be the vital fixtures for survival.
The 2010-2015 u21s gave us:
Rob Hennelly
Brendan Harrison
Stephen Coen
Paddy Durcan
Lee Keegan
Cillian O’Connor
Diarmuid O’Connor
Aidan OShea
Kevin McLoughlin
Jason Doherty
So I don’t quite agree with Edwin McGreal’s analysis that the 2006-2009 U21s formed the core of our current team.
As good a group if not better joined in from the 2010-2015 u21 tranche.
Mayo to win by 4..
Maybe we can win this. Didn’t fancy Tyrone last year either….
Probably go with
Hennellly
Harrison
McCormack
O Donohue
O Hora
Plunkett
Durcan
Ruane
Parsons
McDonagh
Murray
Flynn
McLoughlin
Reape
D O Connor
Diarmuid to play around the middle plenty of height and help on the half forward line and McLoughlin and Reape to do the busy inside. Don’t believe we will see Cillian or some of the other senior players just yet. Few others like Carr carrying injuries.
I don’t believe you’ll see McDonagh either.
No room for boland who made a huge difference the last day he came on
If Cillian isn’t playing, I’d start Loftus for freetaking alone. Wouldn’t trust any of that 15 on frees.
I see eir sports has the game listed on their website to be shown – is it live coverage ? as i see Dublin / Kerry is also down to be shown. Are they showing both simultaneously (eir 1 and 2) or are we delayed coverage ?
Both games are live on Eir 1 and 2 I believe.
Looking at the Virgin Media guide.which has only one Eir channel, we are live at 19.15 and Kerry vs Dublin is deffered.
Great to be back in game week. I love the league and whilst I wont make this one, I’ll be tuning in to channel 410 on virgin media, who now carry eir sport 1, nice! I’ve no idea how its going to go, I never do, but we’ve won our last 3 opening league games so our form line at this time of year is generally ok. We’ve shackled McHugh & Murphy in the past, if we can replicate that, it’ll give us a platform. Onwards!
I recall Aiden O’Shea coming on to tame Murphy a few years ago in a league game where we were in trouble v Donegal. Without him we may well struggle as I don’t see anyone else having the physique to cope with an in form Murphy.
The Kerry Dublin match is live on RTE2
Padraig o hora would manage murphy. Physical guy. Strong and agile. Great tackler. Smart defender. Eoin o donoghue is strong and might fancy a cut at Murphy too. Aside from all the who will mark who , I’d like to see a better scoring rate from chances created. We fall down on this all the time so I’d live to see improvement. The team that scores the most will win so twould be handy to sharpen up in front of goal. Diarmuid and mattie at midfield.
AndyD, I remember that one well. Donegal were in complete control, Murphy lording it. Enter Aido. First thing he did was dispossess Murphy and set up a score. Then Donegal’s newbies lost the plot and kept ploughing into Aido at every opportunity. They had a sending off and slowly but surely we dragged ourselves into it and won it. Boyler great that too if I remember.
Was that one sweet or what?
Season ticket finally arrived through the letter box Today…
UCD well beaten tonight so Stephen Coen won’t have to worry about another Sigerson game next Wednesday!
Coen has played three games in 11 days. Two of them went into extra time. He’s played the full amount in every game. Looked out on his feet tonight as did the whole UCD team. No harm in giving him the week off to properly recover
I would hope that common sense will prevail and S Coen will be told to take weekend off and not travel to Donegal. If he is asked to travel and tog out – then player welfare doesn’t exist.
Was Matthew Ruane playing for any college in this year’s Sigerson Cup?
@YOUNG FELLA HE PLAYED WITH N.U.I.G. by the way does anybody know is there a facetheball competition for the national league this year.
Team named per the Mayo GAA Website:
Mayo begin the defence of their Allianz league title when they travel to Ballybofey on Saturday to face Donegal at 7.15pm.
The team named will see four players making their league debuts. They are Oisin Mullin, Jordan Flynn, Bryan Walsh & Ryan O’Donoghue.
1. David Clarke – Ballina Stepenites
2. Oisin Mullin – Kilmaine
3. Brendan Harrison – Aghamore
4. Colm Boyle – Davitts
5. Padraig O’Hora – Ballina Stephenites
6. Stephen Coen – Hollymount/Carramore
7. Patrick Durcan – Castlebar Mitchels(C)
8. Tom Parsons – Charlestown
9. Jordan Flynn – Crossmolina Deel Rovers
10. Bryan Walsh – Ballintubber
11. Diarmuid O’Connor – Ballintubber
12. Fergal Boland – Aghamore
13. Ryan O’Donoghue – Belmullet
14. Brian Reape – Bohola Moy Davitts
15. James Carr – Ardagh
So Stephen Coen does start… Oisin Mullin playing rules him out of the U20 championship I believe? No Kevin McLoughlin is strange since he was our best player the vs Galway.
Very experimental side overall will make getting a result difficult.
For all the talk of player welfare I don’t think those making the fixture plan know how to spell player welfare much less understand it. Why U20 was brought forward to spring time to clash with both NFL and Sigerson Cup I cannot understand. It should be played alongside the senior championship with a bar on players playing both. What has been achieved by bringing it forward to winter/spring time I do not know. Maybe some players would be inconvenienced by missing out on trips to US etc by playing it in summer but those needing the finance earned in summer could be compensated by being employed as coaches in our clubs being paid from Croke Park funds.
If that the team that start a few players given a big change to impress especially Mullin, o Hora, Flynn, Walsh, Ryan O Donoghue, some of the others like Reape Carr and Boland need to keep hold of a starters jersey. I guess Reape will have free taking responsibilities. Expect to see 1 or 2 changes which is the form. Surprised Mullin didnt stay with the U20s especially with their championship starting early this year, one game and they may be out.
My Oh My, what a change!! Mayo naming a team on Weds. And an almost total change in personnel too – only half of that team would have been starters two years ago. Has there been such a radical selection since 2010? I’d be very surprised if there was. As it is I think it will be amazing, unless Donegal are equally radical, if we win.
Oisin Mullins still eligible to play for the u20s. Has to play senior championship to be ruled out.
