On Saturday night at MacHale Park this year’s Senior and Intermediate club football titles will both be up for grabs. At Intermediate level Belmullet and Burrishoole will be battling it out for the Sweeney Cup after which neighbours Ballintubber and Breaffy will take the field for the Senior decider, with the Moclair Cup the prize on offer. In this episode of the Mayo News football podcast we preview both finals.
Host Rob Murphy and I look ahead to what promises to be a mouth-watering evening of action under the bright lights at MacHale Park. Next we hear from Alan Dillon, who spoke with Mike Finnerty of the Mayo News just after Ballintubber had overcome Castlebar Mitchels following extra-time in last Saturday night’s replay. Mike then catches up with former Knockmore manager Nigel Reape who reflects on Ballintubber’s win and talks about the challenge that now faces them in the decider.
Rob and Mike then get in a huddle with Edwin McGreal and Ger Flanagan of the Mayo News to preview the Senior final, following which we hear from Ballintubber’s Damian Coleman. After that Rob, Ed and Ger turn their thoughts towards the Intermediate decider.
Rob tests the waters with all of this week’s contributors to see who’s likely to prevail on Saturday night. While Belmullet are strongly fancied to claim the Sweeney Cup, Ballintubber only get a hesitant nod to get their hands on the Moclair Cup. We shall see.

The silence is deafening!!!
Very comprehensive preview of senior final. Changed my mind several times as to who I think might shade it. Looking forward to battles through out the pitch. Ruane at midfield. The battle of the teens Gavin and Fadden, both excellent prospects. Can Jason Gibbons put in another five star performance? He could be the difference between the teams if he does push on. Conor O Shea? Can he put himself in contention for Mayo panel.
What a pipe opener the intermediate final is going to be. I’m going for Belmullet and Ballintubber, a poll would be interesting WJ.
Anyway thanks for setting the scene for Saturday.
Thanks Willie Joe and crew, I enjoyed that on my early morning commute. Particularly Alan Dillon’s interview and the insight given into recovery. I guess these young players can recover quickly.
Great podcast as always lads, sticking the headphones in and listening to ye whilst working in the office helps the day go faster at work , brilliant stuff. Can’t wait for the weekend.
