Mayo News football podcast extra – Clare scene set

Right, just to whet your appetite a bit further ahead of tomorrow’s Round 3A qualifier clash with Clare there’s another episode of the Mayo News football podcast to listen to. Do these lads ever go home, I hear you ask.

In this bonus episode, host Rob Murphy and I chat about tomorrow’s match while there are special guest appearances from RTÉ’s Marty Morrissey and John Casey. Marty is, of course, a proud Banner County man and he knows a thing or two, as you might expect, about football in his county. John was on co-commentary duties at the Clare/Laois qualifier match in O’Moore Park last weekend and so his take on Clare and the challenge they’re likely to pose for us tomorrow is well worth a listen.

The latest episode is now good to go on both iTunes and SoundCloud and you can also listen to it here on the site – all you need to do is click the player below. Just the ticket for a Friday afternoon. Enjoy!

  1. Some man for one man WJ. I also love the county Clare and its people. It should be mentioned there are many Mayo people living Clare having moved down to work in the Shannon Free zone year’s ago. I remember there was a huge amount of Mayo flags out along the motorway when we were traveling down to play Kerry in Limerick in 2014.

On the Tuam bypass issue and Michelle Mulhern…well as a TD she should know better and it’s cringe worthy stuff from an elected official…”Open up the Tuam bypass for Mayo fans…” Who does she think we are? Why not open it for the races? Fact is the Road has not been signed off yet and road testing has yet to be carried out so legally the road can not be opened.

Anyway a little bit of traffic jams won’t hurt us. Safe traveling to all. Up Mayo.

  2. Sure they’re still working away on it at the Burke Roundabout. I can’t see any part of the bypass opening for a while yet.

Tuam is not the bottleneck, Claregalway is.

If the traffic is backed up to the Roscommon road north of Claregalway, turn right at Brennans Pub (Garda station is on the right), about a mile north of Claregalway. After about 100m-150m, take the first left, and follow a small single car road, turning left at each junction you meet.

You’ll come out opposite the Castle in Claregalway, saving about 15-20 minutes on a bad day.

  3. Super podcast willie Joe I would take a one point win and on to the next game safe travelling to everyone going

  4. Jaden – Don’t be giving out the rat race runs for god sake! 😉 Another option is to head for Athenry > Craughwell and come out on the N18 at Labane.

  5. Its easy to forget that this site is voluntary run. Hats off Willie Joe.

  6. The Headford road is always quiet at the weekends. Take the first exit @The Tirellean Roundabout, and you’ll be heading for Oranmore.

  7. Just a quick note. Martin O Grady ex Louisburgh and now Dunboyne passed away last night. Martin was Mayo to the bone. Also a stalwart in the local St Peters club. A huge loss to his family and the wider Dunboyne community. It’s the Martin O Gradys of this world that oils the GAA community and machine.

  8. Just heard Peter canavagh on today fm say Leroy won’t play. Has this been confirmed?

  9. Was listening to it too castlebarred Martin Carney didn’t deny or confirm !!

  10. Why is the team not named? It’s half 9 on the day before the game. Sorry, but more nonsense IMO.

  11. WJ
This site has me like an addict waiting for the next fix!
What would we be like, with all that downtime, if we had beaten Galway?
Keep up the great work; it’s a wonderful site.
    Thank you.

  12. Yes, it’s annoying that a team hasn’t been announced but it doesn’t matter a whole pile because we never field the team we announce anyway. You can be sure that the Mayo line-up on the program will not be the one to take the field. The only reason I’d ever buy a match program is to look up the opposition.

  13. I think I read somewhere that this week they would be training on Wednesday and again this evening. Then the team would be announced after training is finished tonight.

It’ll be interesting to see if Conor Loftus starts and if he does, in what position. He started at corner forward against Cavan in the league but with them playing a packed defence he found it very hard to get on the ball that day, he was taken off early in that game. Maybe a position between the half-forward and full-forward line might suit him best. Like the position that Kevin McLoughlin has been playing in the last few games. Then move Kevin to the half-forward line.

  14. Am i right in thinking that the 26 has to be submitted to HQ by 12 mn on Wednesday night. If that is the case then what is the delay in naming the team.

  15. Cloneeman & Ros town what’s the problem? What’s the benefit to the Mayo panel of naming the team earlier than the latest time allowed?other than to satisfy our curiosity. Chill…’s not about us or our opinions “he should start”, “he shouldn’t” etc. At the end of the day it’s about just the panel knowing what’s happening and keeping the panel close knit, together and stopping the rumour mill which has been notorious of late pre games. If that means naming the team late, it suits me

  16. I hope that you moaners are not going to the match.

It probably hasn’t been announced because it gives the opposition less time to prepare for what they have to deal with.

  17. With or without Leroy, we have to believe that we will win tomorrow. It is a chance for others to shine, and better to do it in a championship game.

Won’t be easy but these games could stand to us in the long term. In some ways, I like these qualifiers, and in some ways it is hard to beat the win or bust nature of these games. Enjoyed last trip to Ennis, and confident of a similar result tomorrow.

  18. Does not matter when the team is named. We won’t know for sure the line up until throw in. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

  19. Duno what the problem is. We have a big panel, naming the team late may give the opposition less time to prepare so it’s worth a little patience in my opinion.

  20. Who cares whether the team is named early or not? How does it put any supporter up or down?

  21. Ignore my previous comment, 3 changes from last week, Leroy back at wing back, Seamie and Conor Loftus start, strong team, no excuses!!

  22. Team on mayo gaa now. Conor loftus replacing Andy. Lee named. Seamus o shea starting too.

  23. I am not a moaner and i have been to every Mayo championship game bar London and New York since 1989 and am going to Ennis tomorrow. How come every other county can name their starting lineups much earlier than us.
