Mayo/Roscommon Rivalry, Live Podcast recorded at Solan’s – Mayo Football Podcast 2023 E9

Solan’s Bar in Ballaghaderreen was the venue for our live Mayo Football Podcast recording where we sought to get under the hood of the Mayo/Roscommon rivalry ahead of the counties’ meeting  on Sunday in the opening round of this year’s Connacht SFC.

Mike, Rob and John get the discussion going at Solan’s along with podcast regular and former Ballaghaderreen captain Stephen Drake. They’re then joined by legendary Ballagh’ clubman Christy McCann who chats about famous Mayo/Roscommon clashes down the years and who gives his take on what makes this rivalry so special.

Former Mayo player David Drake then joins brother Stephen in the roundtable at Solan’s as the discussion turns towards the present day rivalry and Sunday’s clash at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park.

  1. Does anyone else think that it’s a pity that US President Joe Biden isint coming to Mayo a few days earlier and he could attend Mayo v Roscommon in Castlebar?. I know he mentioned the Mayo Football team on occasion some international journalist asked him a question.. There is or was a Democratic Governor or Mayor of some state or city or other and he was actually born in or his parents were born in Connemara .the name escapes me, I think Joe Biden in praising him after he had won the said that only fault he had was that he (the Governor or Mayor) supported Galway, while he supports Mayo. Or words to that effect .. There were a few more questions about Gaelic Football from a few journalist’s. The last time Joe Biden was in Ireland, He was no longer vice president and on a private visit, but with the big car and security..He actually stopped the car when he seen two gentlemen, neighbors of my own talking at a farm gate and was talking to two of them in rural Mayo,.. asking about the local history and so on..He had read about the “Fighting Fitzgerald” of Turlough House., His many duels fought and his bizarre end…It’s actually amazing that Joe Biden is actually coming to Mayo again and really not attending the Coronation of King Charlie..At least he has his priorities right.. And we had his holiness Pope Francis signing a Mayo jersey a few years ago…In Mayo we don’t do B-list celebrities. !

  2. Leantimes
I think the guy you are talking about is Marty Walsh (former labour secetary)…..1st generation emigrant from Galway and you are right Biden did refer to the Mayo Galway divide at Walsh’s nomination….
I think there would never be a chance of getting Biden in McHale park security wise couldnt be done….i reckon you can be sure there will be a jersey produced from somewhere though…….I hope its nowhere near your man who is married to the cousin though!!!!

  3. Enjoyed the podcast , solid sound men albeit me thinks they held back a biteen on the intensity felt down the years in the town but I suppose it’s a bit like what happens in town after mayo v ros clash stays in town type of thing .

  4. Not a hope the president would attend the Mayo game. The secret service wouldn’t allow it. They would have to search everyone entering the ground, metal detectors, armed guards etc etc.

  5. @1989, yes Marty Walsh is the name of the guy I just couldn’t remember it at the time..I Googled the “List” of Irish American Politicians in order to jog my memory but still didn’t find the name I was looking for. While Googling the “List” I actually wrote “Lust” by mistake..A few interesting articles on Irish/Mayo American Politicians as well believe you me.

  6. Our Here Comes the Weekend pod is now up on Patreon. Rob hosts this one, with Colm Boyle and Billy Joe Padden, in which they look back on last Sunday’s win over Galway and preview the Roscommon game.

  7. Marty Walsh is now the Executive Director of the National Hockey League’s player union, we probably won’t be seeing him in Tuam or Salthill any time soon 😉

I’m sure someone will present the Commander-in-Chief with an aul green and red geansaí on his travels.
