It looks like we have another moronic incident at McHale Park to cringe about. It emerged yesterday that Padraig Joyce was hit by a stone as he was coming back onto the pitch with the rest of the Galway side for the second half of our league clash with them last month. I’m not sure why the story took the best part of a month to come out but it seems as if PJ told the ref about the incident and then a subsequent investigation by the lads in Croke Park drew a blank.
Hot on the heels of the Kieran Donaghy spoon-throwing affair, this is obviously a development we need like a hole in the head. Sure, the Herrin Chokers are our closest and most bitter rivals but this rivalry is one that only exists on the pitch. Padraig Joyce has been one of the finest footballers in this country over the past decade and it goes without saying that he deserves our respect (we may not like what he does to us but that doesn’t mean that we can’t acknowledge his sublime skills). As real Mayo supporters, we need to do all we can to help identify these missile-throwing gobshites or else very soon we’ll all be tarred with the one brush.
