McLaughlin double downs the Deise

Like the men, the county’s women footballers today ended their National League campaign with a win. Liam McHale’s charges closed out what was an encouraging set of Division One matches this afternoon with a 2-9 to 2-6 win over Waterford at James Stephens Park.

Key to today’s victory came in the form of two Fionnuala McLaughlin goals. The first was in response to Waterford’s goal which opened the scoring in Ballina and the second came shortly before half-time, once again soon after the Deise had goaled at the other end.

We took a three-point lead into half-time and managed the game well from there, with three points to spare at the finish.

The win sees the team – like their male counterparts – finishing fourth in the final Division One standings. Given all the new players tried out this spring and the very young age profile of the panel, that’s a very creditable performance from them.

Mayo: Laura Brennan; Éilis Ronayne, Nicola O’Malley, Danielle Caldwell; Kathryn Sullivan (0-1), Erin Murray, Ciara Needham (0-1); Aoife Geraghty (0-1), Hannah Reape; Fionnuala McLaughlin (2-0), Saoirse Delaney, Maria Cannon (0-3, frees); Sinéad Cafferky, Lisa Cafferky (0-1), Sinéad Walsh. Subs: Ciara Durkan for Erin Murray, Aoife Staunton (0-1) for Lisa Cafferky, Emma Needham for Sinéad Cafferky, Fiona McHale for Sinéad Walsh. One Mayo point unattributed.
