The inter-county season began with a bang last weekend, with three of the four Round 1 games in Division One finishing level. There’s little time to draw breath either, with the second round of matches on this weekend.
In this episode of the Mayo News football podcast, we preview Sunday’s Round 2 meeting of Mayo and Monaghan at Clones. Rob Murphy hosts the show where he’s joined by Edwin McGreal of the Mayo News and by podcast regular Stephen Drake.
The lads discuss Mayo’s sluggish start and storming finish against Donegal last Sunday, they look at the team selection for Markievicz Park and they run the rule over the list of emerging players. The possible loss through injury for the coming weeks of Tommy Conroy is also mentioned as is Diarmuid O’Connor’s form and the re-emergence after injury of Jason Doherty.
Unfortunately, Mayo’s match on Sunday clashes with Kilmeena’s All-Ireland JFC final against Kerry’s Gneeveguilla at Croke Park. We hear from Kilmeena forward Darragh Keaveney who speaks with Oisín McGovern ahead of the big game.

Hi Willie Joe. I see another Joe Ruane has joined the blog. I’ve been posting as Joe Ruane for going on 7 years. Wouldn’t want any confusion. Thank you.

Willie Joe, I tried signing on Patreon but its saying there’s already an account using my email address! Must be some problem as I haven’t signed up yet at all.
I tried emailing you on your ymail account but the email didn’t go through… if you’ve another email let me know and I’ll correspond this way. Thanks
We’re a bit light in midfield bar bringing on Aido, Coen has played several positions but I think CHB is his best, not midfield. Hopefully COS has a good first half and makes it hard for Horan to take him off.
Plunkett should add some stability in the backs compared to the last day. Glad Orme kept on , I think persisting with him will pay off but would like to see more from McDonagh than last week. Overall it’s a strong team.
Is James Carr injured?
Great to get team plus subs bench named. Decent looking team. No doubt we will see AOS at least for one half. Success depends on how quickly we move the ball out of defence. We get sucked into slow build ups and we’re in big trouble imo.

They mention a live blog!
1989 – are you listening to it online and, if so, using the mobile network? If so, it could be the signal, it might be buffering. You can also download the episodes and listen offline so it might be worth trying that. It’s not an issue anyone else has mentioned, so far at any rate.
Liberal role in the tie – I’ve just mailed you directly there.
Joe Ruane – you’re right and I’d agree that you have first dibs there.
Joe Ruane (the other one) – you used to post under the handle ‘Ruanejos’ and it would make sense if you went back to using that.
1989 – I have linked the podcast stream to my Apple Podcast app and it works very well. There are instructions in Patreon on how to do this
thanks doc and wj
Thank you Wilie Joe.
1989, I had the same problem. Solved it by linking the RSS feed to my favourite podcast player (in my case, Castbox). Go to the “My Memberships” section of your Patreon account where your private RSS feed link is displayed. Copy it into the relevent place on your favourite podcast player (ask Google for help in finding where and how). It will then automatically download and play where/when you want with no issues
