More on the weekend’s club championship action

Yesterday wasn’t just a bumper one for the weather (though it sure was that, in this part of the world at any rate) as there were a load of club championship matches down for decision on home soil. Colm Gannon has done an excellent summary of the weekend’s action in the first round of the senior club championship in the Mayo Advertiserhere.

Highlights from the weekend’s senior matches included Ballintubber’s ominous statement of intent in the way they crushed neighbours Breaffy, Ballinrobe’s surprise away win over Crossmolina Deel Rovers (Liam Horan’s audio report on that one is here) and that rip-roaring shootout between Knockmore and Shrule/Glencorrib where Aidan Kilcoyne weighed in with eleven points (five from play) for the winners (this info courtesy of @edmcgreal).

Full results from the weekend’s club championship matches (which I’ve sourced from this thread on gaaboard.com) are as follows:

SFC Group 1: Garrymore 1-6 Aghamore 1-4; Shrule/Glencorrib 1-16 Knockmore 1-18
SFC Group 2: Crossmolina Deel Rovers 0-11 Ballinrobe 2-13; Kiltane 1-8 Castlebar Mitchels 1-13
SFC Group 3: Davitts 0-9 Claremorris 1-10; Ballintubber 1-14 Breaffy 0-3
SFC Group 4: Tuar Mhic Éadaigh 1-7 Ballaghaderreen 1-17; Ballina Stephenites 0-8 Westport 0-8
IFC Group 1: Ballyhaunis 0-7 Parke/Keelogues/Crimlin 0-9
IFC Group 2: Achill 1-6 Charlestown Sarsfields 1-10; Cill Chomáin 1-7 Islandeady 1-10
IFC Group 3: Burrishoole 1-20 Killala 0-12; Kilmaine 0-9 Bonniconlon 2-9
IFC Group 4: Bohola Moy Davitts 1-8 Béal an Mhuirthead 0-10; Hollymount-Carramore 2-14 Mayo Gaels 1-9
JFC: Ballycastle 1-4 Kilfian 1-7.

Finally, on a separate note Ballaghaderreen have released more information about the timetable of events for next weekend’s reopening (full details here). They’re going the whole hog on it, by the looks of it, with events running all the way – as the Yanks would say – from Friday thru Sunday. The official reopening itself will be performed by the Minister for Sport Michael Ring TD at 3.30pm and, perhaps in light of the amount of yapping this might entail, throw-in for the challenge match with Westmeath has now been put back to 4.30pm.

  1. A real physical game in the Cill Chomain Islandeady match. In group 2 of the IFC was probably a battle from the start between Cill Chomain and Islandeady for the second spot. Charlestown would of been expected to get top spot, not so sure after the opening games though.

IMO Islandeady were comfortable enough winners, A penalty in the last few minutes for Cill Chomain made the end of the match a bit nervous from our behalf.

On another note I see that there is complaints about the standard of referee’s and off the ball challenges from the Senior championship games.

  2. I was at the ballintubber/breaffy game. Breaffy were just awful. Ok they were missing both Aidan and Seamus o Shea. Both Huge losses but the players on the pitch bar Gerry Jennings were so poor. The tubber forwards and midfield worked very hard and turned the ball over all day long. However there is alot more in ballintubber and they will be there at the end.

Great to see Aidan Kilcoyne scoring 11 points for Knockmore against Shrule. He is a player who when he is on form is simply top class. Fantastic result for ballinrobe against crossmolina. They have some decent players but they have still alot to do to get out of their group. I’m sad to hear the reports coming from the Ballina/Westport game. Poor football and lots of off the ball incidents. Ballina have been involved in many incidents now on the pitch recently. Last week against breaffy wasn’t pretty and pat Harte got a straight red. Last year against breaffy there was more off the ball incidents. If they want to progress and maintain some respect they would to learn some discipline. Ballina don’t need to resort to negativity and stupid behaviour. They have many top players and have been very successful at underage level in the last few years.

If Ballina do concentrate on football they could rival, Knockmore, castlebar and ballintubber. Until they sort themselves out the moclair cup will be going to either of the three I’ve named in my opinion.

  3. Kilcoyne is very much a form player. I think the break from the inter-county scene lately will have done him good, and he could be an option again if he keeps the level up.

  4. @Digits is there any reason why Kilcoyne isn’t in the County panel this year? Did he opt out? I’d have him in the starting team most days.

  5. kilcoyne would have to learn its a team game and pass the ball the odd would time help

  6. I think he was let go from the panel after the league 2011, along with Mark Ronaldson, Barry Moran and someone else, I can’t remember who. I guess he wasn’t called in this year, unless he opted out, which I hadn’t heard of.

  7. Aidan Kilcoyne wasn’t considered at the start of the year I understand, because he was working in England and was not available. With a performance like last Sunday I’m sure he is back on the radar. I personally would have him ahead of at least 3 of the forwards currently in the Mayo squad.

  8. I agree with Peter Murray. Yes, despite me being from the same club as Killer, he does tend to overdo the soloing when he gets the ball. However, he was as good as ever he was on Sunday and worked very hard for us. I’m not sure if he was working over in England or not, perhaps he was. All I know is that his girlfriend is based over there. He may have gone over to stay with her for a while.

Any word if that incident that happened in the Ballina/Westport as they’re reporting it on hoganstand is real? Now I reckon Ballina could be county champions this year if they get their collective heads together and concentrate on the football side of things.

  9. I’d have to agree with Patriot on the Kilcoyne issue. He’s a lot better than most of the sub forwards and few of the starters on the current team, even if he tends to hold onto the ball a bit.

Would be nice to see him back in the squad and he’d add a goal/free threat to the team.
