New York preview – Mayo News football podcast 2019 E14

The action gets going in the 2019 championship this coming Sunday, with two Connacht championship fixtures being contested that day on foreign fields. Galway and London are in action at McGovern Park in Ruislip on Sunday afternoon and then later on that evening (7.15pm Irish time) Mayo take on New York at Gaelic Park over in the Bronx. The Mayo News football podcast will be in the Big Apple for the latter match, as Mayo taste championship action for the first time since the county’s defeat to Kildare in the qualifiers last June.

In this episode of the podcast we set the scene for the county’s championship opener against New York on Sunday. Co-hosts Rob Murphy (who’ll be in New York) and I (who won’t) open the episode as we look forward to the Sunday’s clash with the Exiles.

Next, we hear from Mayo manager James Horan, with whom Mayo News sports editor Mike Finnerty caught up with at the recent Connacht championship launch. Rob then chats with New York’s manager Justin O’Halloran to hear how his team are preparing for the challenge of taking on the newly-crowned League champions on Sunday.

Finally, back at the Connacht championship launch, Mike chats with provincial secretary John Prenty who looks ahead to the start of the summer action and talks about the planned air dome development at the Connacht GAA HQ in Bekan.

This episode of the Mayo News football podcast is now online and is available to listen to on iTunes, SoundCloud, Podomatic and Spotify. You can also listen to it directly on the Mayo News website as well as here on the blog, using the SoundCloud player below or the one on the right-hand side.

  1. Two spaceships with strong Bekan connections were mentioned on the Podcast! In addition to the dome itself, Michael Collins of Apollo 11 fame actually visited Bekan in 1982 due to family connections.

  2. Let’s get this straight. The guy in charge of organising a match is urging half the expected crowd not to attend.

  3. Does anyone know is it possible to download the podcasts from SoundCloud or could I be emailed them somehow? Flying from Cuba to nyc tomorrow and would love to have them for the flight!

  4. Podcast Republic is a really good free app that I use. You can download the podcasts from that and listen to them offline.
