No Newry news

It’s Thursday night – almost Friday, in fact – and there’s still nothing but the sound of silence ahead of our crunch NFL Division One clash with Down at Páirc Esler in Newry this coming Saturday night (throw-in 7pm). All that’s out there in the public domain at the minute is that the match is on then and that the ref will be Meath’s David Coldrick (whom, by the way, we last encountered in the All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Kerry back in 2011).

Neither ourselves nor the opposition have named our teams as yet but I guess we’ll both do so at some point tomorrow. We’ve a family event on tomorrow that’ll keep me offline for much of the day but if you keep an eye on both @MayoGAA and @OfficialDownGAA you should be able to get the details of both starting line-ups if and when they’re published at some point during the day.

  1. I will, to be sure. It’s as good as a home game for me, starting off here on the Northside of Dublin. An hour or a bit over should get me there, I reckon.

looks to be one of our stronger teams to date , i would still be worried that we don’t have a strong enough full forward line but i think that the players will have enough skill to beat down on the day

  5. I note Alan Murphy is on the bench. Is this the first time this year? Any chance he will get a run out. To be fair to Horan he is right to give Carolan an other chance. He entered the game last Saturday when the game had turned back to Dublin.
Mayo have lost two games. You would swear we had lost to London with some of the comments far too depressing. I would view this forum as being representative of the more fanatical Mayo supporters. As fans we need to be more supportive of the team and not do anything that might negatively affect the team. Some of the Mayo crowd in Dublin were like soccer supporters with a way too much over the top response to the Dublin sending off and an over-reaction to the bad Mayo handling and high balls. IMO I think we should leave the critical stuff to Sean Rice and his friends in the media.

  6. We as supporters know full well that our team can lose the odd game hear and there but IMO what most people are really annoy or put out about is the manner in which we are loosing.I have no problem if we are beaten by a better team on the day but assisting them win the game is what makes me my blood boil. The way we set up our team is hard for us to put teams away. We fall asleep in large parts and gift opposition scores. Its a sad day that we cant comment on our team.I for one would question the management on some of their selections and also decisions during the game and I don’t think i’m alone in that.

  7. 100% raz, we’ve been taking it on the chin far too long. Time to do something about it. What does Michael Walsh need to do to get game time?

  8. Alan Murphy looks interesting in the subs. And yes, I think Carolan deserves more game time. He came into the game when it was at such intensity that it was hard for anyone to get to the pace of it. Interesting too the persisting with O’Malley which I think is good. He offers more tactical options with the kick outs – if those options are used.

While it was frustrating to lose the two points, it was a damn good match. I didn’t notice any Dublin or Mayo supporters looking at the match on the big screen behind the stand while eating burgers and chips, as in the Ireland versus England ‘championship’ decider recently. Just blink and you would miss something vital.

  9. The weather forecast is for a very wet Newry all day Saturday and getting colder. The good news is that visibility is expected to be very good! (courtesy of UTV).

Still it does not sound as bad as at the match in Newry(1999 ) which you reported on and where James Horan scored 2 goals.

  10. Really think Gibbons should have been given another chance, i agree with opt2misteek more game time is what he needs . Saw a lot of Ballintubber games last year and hes one of the best midfielders in the county. Think he should have been given a game with AOS to see how they would work together, him and barry are two alike.

Whats the story with McHale is he injured?

  11. Big match on Saturday evening……and needless to say, a very important one as far as Mayo is concerned. A win will give us some breathing space, anything less and the pressure will be ramped up considerably for our remaining three matches. Personal wise no great change from the Dublin game but it’s tactics that will decide the outcome of this match. Down will be going all out for a home win and will I expect, attack us from the off. While Down may not be as good as Dublin or Tyrone, they have very nippy forwards and unless we devise a system to close them down, could find ourselves in trouble very early on. This I feel will be a big test for J H, he knows the team is good enough to win, so the outcome will come down to tactics…..will he get them right ?

  12. Mickey heart has an article in todays issue of the Irish news in which he takes a swipe at lazy sports reporters and the so called cynical foul,I wounder will it get the backlash our Jh got.

  13. Re: Jason gibbons…didnt happen for him v dublin. Hadnt his best day and had 2 scorable chances in the 1st half that he didnt take but im sure he will get more chances he needs to take even if off the bench.
A few things from the dublin game
-kickouts hanging in the air were awful and invited the break and once again our half forwards were not wise
-full back and half forward line were non existent really
-dont know how many more chances donal vaughan is going to get. His marking is poor. At one stage he had manned up on number 9 (as anyone who plays knows when the other team has possession you often pick up a man that might not be the man you were on all game) and instead of staying on him pushed up on ball aka ballwatching and left him free for the score…that is an obvious example but there are more. He has been consistently cleaned by centre forwards lately and gets involved when not needed in incidents…he ran in on brennan leaving himself open and unprotected and invited the elbow. Think we need to look at cuniffe at 6

  14. I think Donal Vaughan is very athletic, he is strong and he won’t be intiminated.Playing centre back,( any player will agree , that played in the position), is very difficult when your mid field is over run.I wounder what instructions is he following from his manager.
Re: Tom Cuniffe, I think he is a fast attacking half back but a weakness in his game is defending and he has difficulty under a high ball.He is a loose marker, and while he often plays well, it is the case that ,the man he is supposed to be marking, plays well also.
i would like to see Jason Gibbons given a go at centre half forward, Richie feeney is a good honest footballer but he is a converted defender and is lacking in pace. he will get the odd score but thats it.
    Hope we win in Newry.
    Hope we

  15. I,m still not convinced by jam. horan selection tonite in wat i feel is a must win game, but ha is the manager and he dos,ent convince me in wat he,s doing, granted we got to an all ireland with an easy enough route bar the dubs, but he,s made mistakes an continues to do so as far as i,m concerned…..very nervous bout tonite ,need the team to start playing as a unit which they hav,t so far in the 3 league games, hope i,m wrong but if there is not a big improvement tonite on there las 3 games we,ll be leaving newry with no points and then thr pressure starts with donegal an a very improved kildare team coming to town……
