No surprises in championship panel

The 30-man panel for the 2010 championship campaign has been announced and, as expected, there are no surprise names on the list. Club Mayo have set out the list in alphabetical order so, like I did last year, here’s the same information with the players grouped according to what sector of the field they’re likely (though not certain) to operate in over the summer:

Goalkeepers (2): David Clarke (Ballina Stephenites), Kenneth O’Malley (Ballinrobe).

Backs (12): Chris Barrett (Belmullet), Ger Cafferkey (Ballina Stephenites), Kieran Conroy (Shrule-Glencorrib), Tom Cunniffe (Castlebar Mitchels), Alan Feeney (Castlebar Mitchels), Peadar Gardiner (Crossmolina), Keith Higgins (Ballyhaunis), Trevor Howley (Knockmore), Kevin McLoughlin (Knockmore), Shane Nally (Garrymore), Liam O’Malley (Burrishoole), Donal Vaughan (Ballinrobe).

Midfielders (4): Pat Harte (Ballina Stephenites), Ronan McGarrity (Ballina Stephenites), Seamus O’Shea (Breaffy), Tom Parsons (Charlestown).

Forwards (12): Alan Dillon (Ballintubber), Neil Douglas (Castlebar Mitchels), Alan Freeman (Aghamore), Aidan Kilcoyne (Knockmore), Andy Moran (Ballaghaderreen), Barry Moran (Castlebar Mitchels), Conor Mortimer (Shrule-Glencorrib), Trevor Mortimer (Shrule-Glencorrib), Aidan O’Shea (Breaffy), Billy Joe Padden (Belmullet), Mark Ronaldson (Shrule-Glencorrib), Enda Varley (Garrymore).

There are just four newcomers to the panel in 2010 compared to last year, with Shane Nally, Neil Douglas, Alan Freeman and Enda Varley the quartet coming in. They replace James Nallen and David Heaney (both retired), Austin O’Malley and Mikey Sweeney. All of the others on this year’s panel were also there twelve months ago and, apart from the returning Billy Joe Padden, every one of them has seen action at some stage this year, either in the FBD or the NFL. As well as Mikey Sweeney, the other players who featured in this year’s league panel but who are omitted from the 30-man championship list are Lee Keegan, Ger McDonagh and Barry Kelly.

Details of this year’s minor championship panel were also announced today. Club Mayo have full details here. This year’s minor list contains a number of familiar names who took part in the run to the All-Ireland final last year, including Darren Coen, Fergal Durkan, Danny Kirby, Jack McDonnell and Cillian O’Connor. It also contains a certain Conor O’Shea (Breaffy): it might, I reckon, be worthwhile keeping an eye on that lad.

  1. Hard to know where to put Billy Joe, esp seeing as Johnno has given no clues in the league- he could be on any one of 5 lines/

  2. No glaring ommissions i suppose. Panel is along predictable lines. Its what manager does with the personel that now counts. The challenge matches will reveal the way Mahony is thinking and I hope to God its different to the way he was thinking during the league final….

  3. Rumours abound that Shell to Sea are going to start acting the bollix at the opening of the pitch in Belmullet (Mayo V Cavan) on the 15th and again at the Comorthas on the June Bank holiday weekend. I’ll have some hurleys in the boot and will not be afraid to use them if they do 😉 Crazy carry on, hope they see sense.

  4. only 2 erris men , mikey sweeney didnt see much action in the league and FBD can only conclude he wasnt cutting it at training , does anyone know what billy joes fitness levels would be like ? has he been playing club football?

  5. To EastCorkexile let me say keep the hurleys for the politicans that gave the gas away and caused the unholy mess in that part of the world. Having bared my teeth I would like to keep this site a forum for football not a site to take sides in regards to a nasty dispute that has two sides to it and that some people have paid a very high price for already.

  6. Dunno, Bill, but he hasn’t featured all year and with the likes of Varley, Freeman and Douglas now on the panel, you’d have to think it’s doubtful that he will again.
