Results archive expansion

Results archiveSomebody remarked the other day that a lull appeared to have at last descended here on the blog. About bloody time too – for a while there I thought there’d be no downtime at all this year, though with the 2016 FBD campaign getting underway in a little over three weeks from now the closed season (such as it was) will be over soon enough.

One of the advantages of a period of non-activity in the Mayo GAA world is that it gives time for doing stuff that would otherwise stubbornly remain on the to-do list. One of those things that’s been on the list for some time is expanding the results archive.

While the listings for senior league and championship results – which stretch all the way back to 1902 – are more or less complete (though team line-ups from way back will continue to be added, as and when they become available) those for under 21 and minor are not: I only began to document these on an ongoing basis since the start of 2009. It’s always been my stated aim to add to the archive historical results and teams for championship matches in both underage grades.

What I’m now able to unveil is Phase 1 of this process. Over the last few weeks I’ve added the U21 and minor championship results to the archive back as far as 2001 and, for good measure, I’ve also collected and added in senior FBD league results and team details back as far as then as well. These are all now up on the archive and available for viewing here.

The usual caveats apply in relation to the results I’ve collected, i.e. I can’t vouch that I’ve tracked down every single match that was played (though I’d be confident I’ve got at least 99% of them) and there may be errors in there as regards players’ names, scores or whatever (either due to mistakes I’ve made in transcribing the records or in how they were originally recorded). If anyone spots any errors or omissions in any match (regardless of when it was played) then please let me know and I’ll make the necessary corrections.

It remains my aim to continue this process so that in time the results archive will contain a full listing of all U21 and minor championship matches we played in. For the former, this goes back to 1964 while for the latter it runs all the way back to 1929. I’ve no idea when I’ll get round to completing the job – it won’t be next year and it mightn’t be the year after either but hopefully it will one day be complete. In the meantime, feel free to continue wandering through this expanding work in progress.

  1. I haven’t posted much on the Blog this past while but have continued to follow the many interesting comments posted by those Hardy Bucks who are the life and sole of the site. As it happens though, I was as you put it Willie Joe, wandering through the archives recently and had noticed the many years of match results now posted. Where this information may not mean a whole lot to some supporter, I can imagine for the many guys (and indeed their immediate families), who gave of their all in representing their County over the years, they would find this information most interesting and in the passing of time can still feel their efforts, no matter how humble, are not forgotten.

  2. Thanks Willie Joe.

These archives are a treasure trove.

I call on them countless times to check things out, even while posting. In fact it’s good to be able to throw in chapter and verse when some debate is raging, and you can at times pass yourself off as a memory man.

The addition of minor and U21 will be a huge addition. One of the great pleasures is being able to track progress of players through the ranks and through the years. I do this with my old programmes as well; sometimes it’s the minor game I check out because those selections are the starting point of careers, at least of those in the county jersey.

Finally, when you have time (!!!), any chance of including opposition teams in the archive?

  3. It was me that commented on the lul WJ and by God i’d say you’re glad of it. Even if it’s only a few weeks! I am full of admiration for the work you put into this site & adding minor & U21s is simply going above and beyond. But as mentioned above its a real treasure trove. Keep up the unbelievable work & thank you as always

  4. Fair play to you WJ, your some man for one man! Its great to see someone give so selflessly for the cause of keeping people informed about Mayo GAA, especially in an era of the: Whats in it for me!, brigade. Thanks for all of the great work.

  5. Willie this is a bit like the infamous ‘CA bfhuil se’ murder in Kerry a long time ago but who clobbered John Finn in ’85?

  6. Good man WJ and thank you. Hope that you and your family have a wonderful Christmas. The fairy lights went on the tree again and there flashing green and red. Happy Christmas to everyone on here.

  7. I think the Statute of Limitations applies on that one at this stage, Citog. Emotions were very raw on it at the time, though, and there were far fewer TV cameras running then so it was easier to get away with that kind of thuggery in those days.

  8. Really useful archive especially for working out stuff like age profile of current senior crop , I often get them wrong with the likes of Keegan and kev mgloughlin . Plenty of time for the likes of kirby and Darren Coen to establish themselves as seniors but I often think of the likes as a lot older than they actually are.

With it being only 13/14 odd weeks till under 21 championship , I wonder has there been a panel picked yet ? Thought it silly to not enter Hastings cup .

  9. Good man Willie Joe and thanks for all the work in keeping the site going, not to mention the archive!!
When the year turns and the days really lengthen I’m sure that work will take the back seat to the day to day attention needed to keep the site as civilised as it is. I suppose the main reason I keep coming back is purely for information but also for the genuine and articulate way the posters here put forward their opinions.
    Thanks!

    Mayo for Sam 2016.

  10. I think it was Croke Park who pulled the plug on the Hastings Cup. It’s been running for years with more or less midland counties like Leitrim, Longford, Cavan and Westmeath. It is only recently Mayo and several other counties bothered with it. It had expanded so much it became like an alternative U21 championship so Croke Park curtailed it as a tournament. As far as I know collective training for U21 is banned until Jan 1st. [Player burn out and all that]. So I doubt if a panel has been officially named yet. That’s not to say that those expected to be on the panel do not yet know. Just we supporters have to be patient.

  11. The Mayo U21s are actually taking part in a new competition in Jan 2016 called the North-West Under-21 Cup. I seen Mayo’s fixture for this somewhere but I can’t find them now. The only info I could find is the below details, which are on the Donegal official website.

    ………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
DONEGAL’S UNDER-21 footballers will compete in a four-team tournament in preparation for the 2016 Ulster Under-21 Championship. The North-West Under-21 Cup will be run in January and will see Declan Bonner’s Donegal take on Sligo, Fermanagh and Mayo. Donegal meet Sligo on January 2nd before taking on Fermanagh a week later on January 9th with a game against Mayo on January 16th. Venues and times for the games have yet to be confirmed. The top two teams will contest the final on January 23rd.

  12. P.S. With it been a four team tournament, I take it that Mayo’s fixtures must be as follows:

    Jan 2nd – v Fermanagh, Jan 9th – v Sligo and Jan 16th – v Donegal

  13. Thanks for that info hse. Delighted to hear about that competition which is first I heard of it (best blog in the gaa world this one) . I’d go to them games before I’d travel to fbd tbh, as strange as that might sound . Hope they announce venues/time and dates for them games soon.

anyone willing to have a stab at guessing a dozen or so of the panel ?

  14. Mayo won the Hastings Cup in 2001. Kevin McStay was the manager. He had a great U21 team. Thanks for the archives and updates WJ. Priceless.
