Results round-up

There are a few county results to report on, not including the Minor football win on Friday night that’s already been dealt with here, so let’s take a quick trot through these matches.

The most appropriate place to start is with the LGFA U16s (pictured above) who claimed a back-to-back Connacht title success today when they beat Galway by 2-18 to 3-10 after extra-time in the provincial A final.

The match was played at the Connacht Centre of Excellence in breezy and showery conditions. While the Mayo girls were to the fore early on, holding a lead of six points at one stage, goals from the opposition kept them in it.

A third Galway goal put them in the ascendency in the closing stage but the defending champions held their nerve, no-one more so than Emma Stagg who landed a last-minute free to force extra time. The Green and Red powered on in extra time to win by eight at the finish.

Over at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park, meanwhile, the county’s hurlers got their Rackard Cup campaign off to a positive start.

They overcame a wobbly start against Monaghan, who hit them for two first half goals and who led by two points at the break. It was all Mayo in the second half, though, with the Farney lads only adding a single point to their tally after the break. The home side had 22 points to spare at the finish, as they won by 4-24 to 2-8.

Sticking to the small ball, the county’s U17 hurlers had a good win up in Donegal in Round 2 of the Celtic Challenge yesterday. They won that one at Convoy by 1-14 to 1-8.

Finally, it was also a good weekend on the camogie front as the Minors beat Wicklow in Round 5 of the Minor C Championship at Abbotstown by 2-11 to 0-8.

Congrats to all the Mayo teams on their wins this weekend.

  1. Congratulations to Francis Regan and his Mayo lgfa U16s on a fantastic result. Wasn’t present but my daughter and granddaughters were and apparently the character shown was the difference. Keep it going ladies!
