Return of the Monday match reports

Life is starting to return to normal after the holiday period, the football is back – for us, after a too-long absence – and so it’s time too for the Monday match reports to make their return.

As you’d imagine, there’s quite a bit of coverage about our match against Leitrim yesterday in light of the novel climax to that encounter. There are match reports, there are photos and there’s a bit of audio and there’s some video too. Here’s what I’ve managed to uncover relating to yesterday’s game at Carrick-on-Shannon.

Locals: Mayo Advertiser, Connaught Telegraph, Leitrim Observer, Shannonside, Ocean FM (includes audio of post-match reaction from Leitrim manager Terry Hyland).

Nationals: Irish Times, Irish Examiner, Irish Independent, Irish Sun.

Others: GAA, Connacht GAA, RTÉ (match report, post-game quotes from Jason Doherty), The 42, Buzz.ie.

Photos: Mayo Mick, Sportsfile, Inpho, Leitrim Observer.

Audio: extract from RTÉ’s Morning Ireland sports bulletin, in which Connacht Council Secretary John Prenty explains the background to the decision to have a penalty shootout yesterday.

Video: Mayo Mick (match highlights, penalty shootout), Mayo Advertiser, Connacht GAA.

That’s quite the haul, I think you’ll agree, for a first round FBD League game and it should prove more than enough to ease you into the week. If it’s not, though, you’ll be interested to know that we’ll have the first 2019 episode of the Mayo News football podcast online shortly, covering all the fun and games from Páirc Seán yesterday. The year is now officially back up and running all right.

  1. And we’re back up and running…it’s been far too long since the 30th of June.

Yesterday was always going to be different and credit where it’s due Leitrim are a decent team. Strong and solid, they took some good scores and I’d hazard a guess created more than Mayo. Their number 24 did very well in the middle.

Overall the Mayo performance wasn’t vintage but it was the 6th of January and we had to start somewhere.

I thought Fergal Boland was excellent and had bulked up a lot.

Few problems in the full back line, can be corrected.

Half back line not it’s rampaging best but it was adequate.

8/9 worked well but legs got tired on a heavy pitch.

Half forward line played well and in the 2nd half all did a good job.

Full forward line showed well and were effective, some more than others.

Subs took a while to settle but lots of scope to improve.

Lots of guys to come back and fight for jerseys.

Plenty more balls will be kicked from various stands and terraces this year as a fan.

    All in it together!

  2. Match reports aside…yer man in the red jacket behind the goal should get free tickets for all Mayo games!:))?
