I was a bit too quick on the draw for my own good last night with news about the team to face GMIT tomorrow evening. It turns out that there’s one change to the side that was named to face Leitrim, with Alan Feeney replacing his brother Richie at left corner-back. A well-informed source tells me that one of Richie’s feet had a too-close encounter with a nail the other day which means that he’s in no fit state to face those speedy GMIT corner-forwards tomorrow evening and so Alan – a regular county panelist last year – will line out instead. It’ll be Alan’s first start for the county since the FBD Home Final win over Galway last February. Here’s the corrected line-out for tomorrow evening’s match:
Mayo (FBD League v GMIT, 15/1/2011): David Clarke (Ballina Stephenites); Cathal Hallinan (Ballintubber), Ger Cafferkey (Ballina Stephenites), Alan Feeney (Castlebar Mitchels); Trevor Howley (Knockmore), Mike Nestor (Ballintubber), Chris Barrett (Belmullet); Ronan McGarrity (Ballina Stephenites), Barry Moran (Castlebar Mitchels); Aidan Campbell (Swinford), Austin O’Malley (St. Vincent’s, Dublin), Aidan Kilcoyne (Knockmore); Kevin Dolan (Tourmakeady), Andy Moran (captain) (Ballaghaderreen), Brian Benson (Crossmolina).
I know there’s been some talk about whether or not the match will go ahead at all tomorrow night – with the Mayo News stating on its Facebook page that a “planning issue with the floodlights” could prevent its going ahead – but my understanding is that, weather permitting (and the forecast is pretty dire), the match will be played as planned. There was, I understand, some debate about it at a meeting of Castlebar Urban District Council yesterday but the County Board had met previously with the Urban Council and clearance was given at that stage for the match to go ahead. If there’s any change on this over the course of the day, I’ll post details here.
UPDATE: It’s now been confirmed that the match is definitely going ahead under lights at McHale Park tomorrow evening (throw-in 7.30 pm) – see Mayo News report to this effect.
Will we have many county contenders on show for the opposition?
There are a few alright: can’t think of any names off the top of my head but sure all will be revealed later on.
These are the county players in the GMIT squad
Paul Conroy, Stephen Kavanagh & Tomas Fahy, (Galway).
Eoin Warde, (Leitrim).
Niall Prenty & Brendan Walsh, (Mayo).
Colm O. Neill & Daniel Rogers, (Roscommon).
