Rounders All-Ireland glory for Kilmeena

Football is the focus for Mayo’s clubs this weekend but it’s worth giving a shout-out to Kilmeena for their exploits in a different GAA code – Rounders. That’s because this afternoon the West Mayo club won the Junior Mixed All-Ireland Rounders title, beating Galway City Raparees 10-9 in the final at Abbotstown.

The match was described on Twitter (or X as it’s laughably called nowadays) by GAA Rounders as “an epic encounter”, which I guess is the best way to win any kind of All-Ireland crown. Kilmeena raced into an early lead and they were up 6-1 going into the third innings but their Galway opponents shaved that lead back to 7-4 in the third and the score was 7-6 going into the final innings.

There was just one between them at the finish too but that was enough to seal All-Ireland glory for the women and men from Mayo. Huge congrats to them.
