Right, with our Connacht Championship opener against New York now fast approaching, it’s time to bring the shutters down on the poll for our Player of this year’s National League.

The vote was a closely-fought one, between Ryan O’Donoghue, our leading scorer in the campaign, and Fergal Boland, who notched most scores from play over the course of the seven Division One games we played.

In the end, it was Ryan O’Donoghue who narrowly came out on top, with the Belmullet clubman gaining 47% of the vote. Aghamore’s Fergal Boland was just behind him on 46%, with the other shortlisted player, Sam Callinan of Ballina Stephenites, on 7%.

Congrats to Ryan on what’s his second such award – you also voted him as our Player of the League in 2022. Here’s to plenty more award-winning performances from him in the future and further strong showings from Fergal and Sam too. Well done to them all.

  1. And he only had an average league by his own standards. As did most of our players. Ryan is arguably our most important player now, Paddy there too. They are two leaders (others need to step up to that level). Paddy slightly less crucial because we have far more options in that sector whereas it’s hard to see Mayo beating any other top level team without Rod and we need other forwards to raise their levels before we can win an All Ireland.

Our only other proven ‘scorer’ is Cillian and following on from Boyler’s opinion on the recent podcast, I agree with him that management didn’t play Cillian enough. Ok his form is patchy but he’s only gonna improve and rediscover it with games. IMO he should have been given more minutes. We just don’t have another players in his mould.

Also, going back to Rod; I said it here when the team v Monaghan …why on earth was he starting!? I just don’t understand it. I’d love to know managements reason. It was risky and it backfired. He went off with a heavily strapped leg. Surely it was an ideal opportunity to test other players and/or get more game time into lads.

  2. I thought Fergal Boland maybe shaded it and he has to start come championship because he’s put his hand up strongly. Played well in nearly every game and probably our highest scorer from play. There’s an argument we could replace Fergal but not Ryan and that’s a fair enough point. An inside man who can win ball and score is a must.

  3. it speaks of our overall form that no player really stood out and that t5he 3 leading candidates here all had patchy league campaigns

  4. What an help, if we got Tommy back to form of two years ago. And Mattie as well. Know more in these guys especially. But ROD player of league, and 2nd spot goes to Fergal Boland.
