It’s been the best Mayo Senior football Championship in ages and yesterday’s final between Knockmore and Breaffy finished off the season in fine style. Ray Dempsey’s hard-working, energetic Knockmore side are the SFC champions for 2020, their youthful zest and hunger to succeed proving too much for a Breaffy team who, once again, tasted defeat at the final hurdle.
In this episode of the Mayo News football podcast we take you into MacHale Park for a taste of the action, as well as for plenty of post-match reaction. Rob Murphy and Mayo News sports editor, Mike Finnerty anchor the show and they’re joined in MacHale Park by Edwin McGreal of Breaffy and the Mayo News and former Knockmore manager Eamon Clarke, as together they take us through the dramatic Moclair Cup decider.
Post-game, Mike catches up with Knockmore’s Kevin McLoughlin and Kieran Langan while Rob gets Ray Dempsey’s reaction to his charges’ title success. Finally, a rueful Edwin McGreal gives his overview of the game and reflects on yet another final that slipped out of Breaffy’s grasp.

Who do we think will be getting a call from Horan this week regarding call ups to the county panel now that the club season is over. A lot of talent coming through but would probably need a good season or two’ to develop them
Would like to see them give Kieran king a call.
Think he is just 20 and is one to look out for in the future.
Well done knockmore.
We need to see some new guys this Season, with a crazy year so far due to Covid19 I think it’s time to shake things up.
This slow build up the pitch, short hand passing and then you see all the opposition are in place to defend is not going to work against the good times.
Knockmore showed us how a packed defence can be opened up with runners going to specific areas in order to pick up the quick pass after at least 4 defenders were drawn to the player that made that clever pass.
Just a thought. IC championship should always be played after club. It will need a lot of changes. Club start inmarch/April and end in June. Then AIF series to end in September. National league over winter like years ago. Some competition will have to go.some money lost.
With very short preparation time before two important league games and knockout championship I cant see any new additions to the current panel which played the league so far. James will need to go with experienced Intercounty players for the upcoming games. Next year he will be looking at new additions when he has the time to work with them.
@Mayomad, Some of the current panel weren’t able to feature in their clubs championship games due to injury or had no major impact for their clubs.
It doesn’t make sense to retain such players ahead of other players who were injury free and had far more impact.
Some of the current panel may be OK for this short season, but it will be their Swan song. A small few could be added. I wish all trackers were burned __they don’t measure heart cuteness or hardness or morale on rest of team
The government are talking about a Possible national lockdown in 2 weeks time if cases keep rising if this happens they’ll be no more football this year. Think it would be wiser and probably safer to forgot about football for this year.

Yeah, not to be negative but it would be a miracle if intercounty championship goes ahead. We’re coming into the worst time of year in respect of covid. The player on the Donegal team testing positive is, I suspect, a sign of things to come in the near future (and on a bigger scale of course) and it may reach a point where football is simply untenable. Hope I’m wrong….
It’s going to be hard to see too many additions to the Mayo panel due to the possible restrictions of county panels being at 32 players.Pre Covid Mayo had about 40 players on panel. The list of players I would like to see considered now or for 2021 would be Colm Reape (Knockmore),David McHale (Knockmore), Kieran King (Knockmore),Enda Hession (Garrymore), Donovan Cosgrove (Kiltimagh),Conor Igoe (Bonniconlon),Conor O Shea (Breaffy),Jack Carney (Kilmeena),Cian Hanley (Ballaghadereen),Gary McHale (Balla),Conor Diskin (Claremorris),Darren McHale (Knockmore), Aidan Orme (Knockmore), Peter Naughton (Knockmore),Gerry Canavan (Mayo Gaels),Mark Moran (Westport),Colm Moran (Westport),Evan Regan (Ballina) and Dylan Prendergast (Louisburgh) if he doesn’t have rugby commitments.
Jesus,Mayo Gooch, that’s some research you’ve done. Horan should be giving you a call!
Brilliant Mayo Gooch – that’s the number crunching we want!! With every day that passes and covid numbers increasing, it looks less likely there will be a championship. The main thing for the County Board over this winter should be looking at ways to deal with the debt on McHale Park.
Now is the time to deal with mchale pk surface and perhaps use the Dome for home games when crowds are limited. We all saw how good pairc tailteam was for our league game this year
Jr, county board haven’t a penny after covid, it will be a long long time before they or any other county board are in a position to look at a new surfaces. Also the Dome isn’t a MayoGAA facility, it belongs to Connacht Board. Mayo will most likely have to pay for its use, no money for that either.
@MayoGooch, thats a pretty good stab at senior champo team of the year, i would something v similar with only a few minor tweaks
