Unchanged team named for tomorrow night

We named our team a bit earlier on for tomorrow evening’s League clash with Kerry at MacHale Park (throw-in 7pm). Here’s the team we’ve named:

Mayo (NFL Division One v Kerry, 3/2/2018): David Clarke (Ballina Stephenites); Brendan Harrison (Aghamore), Ger Cafferkey (Ballina Stephenites), Eoin O’Donoghue (Belmullet); Colm Boyle (Davitts), Stephen Coen (Hollymount/Carramore), Paddy Durcan (Castlebar Mitchels); Jason Gibbons (Ballintubber), Shane Nally (Garrymore); Kevin McLoughlin (Knockmore), Aidan O’Shea (Breaffy), Diarmuid O’Connor (Ballintubber); Neil Douglas (Castlebar Mitchels), Evan Regan (Ballina Stephenites), Andy Moran (Ballaghaderreen).

So it’s the same fifteen who lined out in Clones. Colm Boyle, who came off suffering from an apparent dead leg following a nasty hit late on in that game, is named to start. Whether he does or not is another question.

The team we’ve announced features seven players who also lined out from the start the last time we faced Kerry, in last year’s All-Ireland semi-final replay. David Clarke, Brendan Harrison, Colm Boyle, Kevin McLoughlin, Aidan O’Shea, Diarmuid O’Connor and Andy Moran all started for us out that day, while Paddy Durcan, Stephen Coen and Ger Cafferkey also joined the fray from the bench.

Best of luck to all of the lads selected to play for us tomorrow night.

Kerry also named their team this evening, full details here.

  1. Lot of newbies in that Kerry team. Either way they can talk it up – unless they get hammered.

  2. Strong team named. There will be a few changes before throw in. Cannot see Boyler taking any part as he was unable to walk after a heavy challenge last Sunday. Best of luck to all the lads. Come on Mayo

  3. Very strong team named by Rochford. Can’t wait to see how the Kerry young guns get on tomorrow against those Mayo players. The S&C should be a telling factor with Mayo but youth while ful of innocence reflectively breeds arrogance, this is the one hope we can have plus Mayo have let opposition steal far too many results from their home grounds in recent years, results that they should have had in their back pocket so we travel in the mist of history.

I hope it’s a great game and I equally hope no player is injured. Good lock from 8.20pm tomorrow night .

  4. Soft ground will probably suit our older guys as their S&C over the years will help them plough away at this time of year until they sharpen up for championship . IF we win midfield we will win .

  5. Colm Boyle and Andy Moran don’t need this game. Give them a break and try some of the young guns.
    Good luck to all.
    Up Mayo.

  6. Madness starting Andy Moran at this time of the year at 34 we should be wrapping him in cotton wool and using him sparingly. Give Freeman, Gallagher or Treacey a game if they are fit

  7. Andy played every game last year including FBD & it did him no harm. You need at least 7/8 regulars for each game to give new players a chance in a competitive team.

  8. Jr I’m not sure about freeman. I don’t think we’re moving forward bringing him back. The other 2 guys have a lot of potential and like u I would like to see them get game time. That kerry defence is vulnerable and can be exploited big time.

  9. Freeman’s last game in 2016 for Mayo was one he did very well in against Rossies in the league. Winning dirty ball, good in the air and recall one beauty of a point with his left. I think the guy definitely deserves some league time and might also be a more reliable free taker than Cillian these days.

  10. Actually at 34 what he needs is games and more games. He should start every single game if fit to do so

  11. Andy Moran will start most if not all of Mayos games if fit because he remains the best scoring forward from play that Mayo have. Very weakened Kerry team like i said earlier a great time to play them.

  12. It may be the league but you can expect plenty of bite in this game. Kerry still don’t rate Mayo as serious contenders and we need to remind them again of the pecking order. I’ve no problem with Andy playing, we need a blend in order to help the likes of Regan. Looking forward to this game, Hon Mayo!

  13. Don,t expect announced team to start, as usual. Probably Tom P. in midfield, and C.O C up front, would love to know where F. Boland has disappeared to, played in almost every league game last year ??

  14. Outside the pale. Boland is around. He had long winter hurling as his club made it to all Ireland series. Might be on panel for kerry game

  15. Your dead right mayo mark about andy.
I think kevin mcloughlin has missed very little games since 2011 and cant recall him ever injured.theres very little training done for the older lads this time of year so plenty of games is what needed.
Good mixture of youth and experience through the rest of league is whats wanted.

  16. Let’s just stand back and appreciate Andy. And Boyler. Lads who HUNGER! Who beg for game time. I’m not criticising the lads who don’t play. But, everything about Andy and Boyler screams “MAYO!” In their search to make us great, they have made us GREAT.

  17. Houseofpride, you are so right. After voting in the MOTM poll last week I copped on that I hadn’t included Colm Boyle in my top 3, and was angry with myself. I realised that we almost take it for granted that he will perform, will put everything into every game, often with no regard to his own safety. His performance last week would have won MOTM for many other players but rightly or wrongly we expect it from him, and it’s not an exceptional occurrence when he does what he does every time he pulls on the green and red, or indeed the black and red of Mayo or Davitts. Same can be said if so many others of the panel who have been on the road particularly since 2011. I keep saying it, we have lived through a golden age of Mayo football, our kids should be told to savour these years because those of us in our 30’s, 40’’s, 50’’s and older can remember different times and I am not looking forward to the wheel turning again in the future. So anytime these soldiers can play, want to play, and are selected to play on wet and cold February nights it should be enjoyed, they should be supported, clapped and cheered from the bottom of our lungs.

  18. Boyler named to play after his dead leg. Rumour has it that the Monaghan man who hit him is out for the year.
Team as announced will not start.

  19. Boyler is a terrier , full of bravery and a fierce tiger like attitude , young fella i agree with ur assessment, we expect it from him , Colm ,
But I don’t think thats wrong , he has showed for years that is consistent, like so many others ,
Hard to see him starting after been almost carried off last Sunday , that said will take a lot more than an assault from a thug to stop one of our best doing what he does best ,
Pebblesmeller I went for mayo by 2 earlier in the week 2 ,reckon we will have a battle but I can see us rising to the challenge and sneaking victory
    Up mayo

  20. That’s fine starting Andy in the depths of winter but come Summer if we are a point down with 5 minutes to go and Andy has played his heart out and is spent and we have no one to come on and kick a score because we didn’t give our young lads game time in the league I hope your all ok with that

  21. Last year Andy was labelled as someone who didn’t have a full game in him. By the semi final he finished both games v Kerry. So games and more games benefit him.

What we need is our best forwards in top condition. Andy needs games. So give him games
