Team to face NUIG named

Mayo flag AIF 2013

The first team sheet of the Holmes/Connelly era was announced a short while ago. Here’s the starting line-up and the subs for today:

Mayo (Connacht FBD League v NUIG, 4/1/2015): Robert Hennelly (Breaffy); Darren McHugh (Hollymount/Carramore), Ger Cafferkey (Ballina Stephenites), Stephen Coen (Hollymount/Carramore); Chris Barrett (Belmullet), Caolan Crowe (Garrymore), Donal Vaughan (Ballinrobe); Jason Gibbons (Ballintubber), Alex Corduff (Ballina Stephenites); Neil Douglas (Castlebar Mitchels), Adam Gallagher (Mayo Gaels), Michael Conroy (Davitts); Evan Regan (Ballina Stephenites), Alan Freeman (Aghamore), Mark Ronaldson (Shrule/Glencorrib). Subs: David Clarke (Ballina Stephenites), Kevin Keane (Westport), Keith Rogers (Ballaghaderreen), Barry Moran (Castlebar Mitchels), Kevin McLoughlin (Knockmore), Mikey Sweeney (Kiltane), Jason Doherty (Burrishoole).

Plenty of experimentation as you’d expect. From what I can make out, it’s senior debuts for Darren McHugh, Caolan Crowe and Alex Corduff and possibly first senior starts (open to correction here) for Stephen Coen and Neil Douglas. Adam Gallagher is back in the frame for the first time since the latter stages of last year’s League campaign while Evan Regan is selected for the first time since the 2013 NFL. Mark Ronaldson returns to the fold after a four-year absence from the senior set-up. Best of luck to them all today.

I’m not going to be at MacHale Park myself today but Digits will be and his match report will be posted here later on. So it’s a good start for the match reporting meitheal here on the site and here’s hoping for a positive start for the team in 2015 too.

  1. No Zippy in the listing- am I missing something?. Chap deserves a break but it’s an odd one after having named him as captain

  2. Happy NY Willie Joe! Interesting team. Think Stephen Coen came on as a sub against Tyrone last year & in FBD, so you are correct in that it’s his first start.

Mark Ronaldson is interesting also; of course he figured in the Holmes/Connelly U21 success. Interesting focus on small (speedy?) fast guys such as Ronaldson, Conroy, Sweeney, and Regan. Not all of them are going to be in a championship team together so competition is going to be fierce. Question remains: is there a Donaghy type in the making? And as for full back? This is certainly a statement of intent regarding Cafferky.

  3. I think its interesting, while theirs some established faces there, there is no one on that team guaranteed a starting spot in the last few years bar Vaughan and Cafferky. What i mean by that, and not putting any of the players down, imo, whether its due to ability or the strong competition for the same number jersey, all of those players will have to fight for a starting spot, with Vaughan I would imagine the safest, Gibbons stiff competion against O’Sheas, Cafferky getting some (unfair, imo) criticisms, Hennely keep hs place against Clarke. Unlike some players who we are fairly certain will keep there places bar injury as there some of the best in Ireland eg. O’Connor, AOS, Boyle Keegan and Captain Zippy.

  4. Keith Higgins n most the regulars need a rest. Anyone know much about Darren McHugh at corner back?
Mike Conroy goes back to half forward where he finished the season strong as a ball carrier. Adam Gallagher really have high hopes for him at centre forward. We’ve been missing a settled centre forward.
Chris Barrett I like at half back as he is one of the best pure footballing defenders. Last year we were guilty of flogging our half back line with huge workload. Maybe good to be subbing one or two in there and he’d be a great option last 20 mins given that Keegan/Boyle/Vaughan is likely to remain as is. Boyle gets through so much work n big hits he’s often suffering last 10 mins.

  5. Kevin Keane at 6 with Crowe to 7. Doc in for Freeman. Half time changes, Freeman in for the black carded Doc, Sweeney for Conroy and Rodgers for Cafferkey. Good crowd, picky ref, NUIG no. 13 a lovely player. 4 from 4 in the first half.

  6. Great to see Adam Gallagher and Mark Regan getting another chance I think both of them could be big players for us and good to see a lot of new faces being tried out FBD is the ideal place to try then out best of luck to one and all and the new management team
