We’ve just named our team for tomorrow’s match with Westmeath. Here it is:
Mayo (NFL Division Two North v Westmeath, 22/5/2021): Robbie Hennelly (Breaffy); Enda Hession (Garrymore), Oisin Mullin (Kilmaine), Lee Keegan (Westport); Michael Plunkett (Ballintubber), Paddy Durcan (Castlebar Mitchels), Rory Brickenden (Westport); Matthew Ruane (Breaffy), Diarmuid O’Connor (Ballintubber); Fionn McDonagh (Westport), Kevin McLoughlin (Knockmore), Jordan Flynn (Crossmolina Deel Rovers); Tommy Conroy (The Neale), Cillian O’Connor (Ballintubber), Ryan O’Donoghue.
So it’s an unchanged side, with the same fifteen who lined out against Down last Saturday named again to start at Cusack Park tomorrow. The best of luck to them.
Obviously, with the same team picked, westmeath are getting the respect they deserve, it will be, i think, a lot tighter than the Down game.
A strong team again let’s hope they do the business tomorrow .It will not be easy but I can see the fitness level of Mayo to stand to them near the finish of this game to overcome this Westmeath team.UP MAYO
What time is the game on at please
Not that easy to interpret JH’s thinking, with no changes to the starting 15.
I expected a bit more experimenting on Sunday
and again in round 3, as will still have a likely Semi-Final, and hopefully Final before Leitrim and hopefully Sligo in the Championship.
With over 50 players in the panel and only a handful recovering from injuries, it seems early to have a settled starting team, if that line-up starts?
It’s a 3pm start tomorrow, James. Camogie match is on at 2pm and the women are on at 7.30pm.
3 pm James. Unfortunately, it’s on EIR only, and I don’t have it. Michael D McAndrew and Martin Carney will do a good job on it.
Hello All,
After hoping for newbies I can see the sense of the same selection and and can look forward even more to the substitutions.
I am happy to listen on Midwest. My reception was not great on GAAGO, it was a bit stop and start. Saw enough to familiarise myself with the faces and can’t say I noticed the jersies.
Good luck to the Ladies and Hurlers.
Ciaran 2.
Westmeath getting the respect they deserve surly. Delighted to see Jordan and Fionn named again in the half forward line. They were good last week and we need their ball winning ability in that area of the field. Win tomorrow and we have the big one to come in the semifinals. That’s a must win game because its for promotion to Div 1
@cloud9.there will be no league final for mayo even if they win semifinal and it’s sligo 1st and then Leitrim provided they keep winning in the championship. Good luck to all teams over the weekend
Best of luck to all the Mayo teams this weekend.
Thought there might be a few new faces, there may well be. No harm to throw them in and if the pressure comes on, let’s see what impact the bench makes.
That’s what it seems to come down to for us, the last 20…
Not looking for faults here, but why is the best ball carrier positioned at fullback ??, this doesn’t make sense at all. Games are won up front.
agree Mayo 88. Personally would be naming Durcan and Mullin in the forward line and giving them free roles basically playing as 3rd and 4th midfielders. Given license to attack when we have the ball. Keegan at CB.
in 94 Geraghty played wing back for Meath. Brendan Reilly was corner back in 91. Both played in forward line against us in 96. Mayo seem to refuse to experiment with lads pushed up the pitch
Is there any keeper between the age of of 20 and 27 in the squad. Surely there’s someone in that age bracket that’s worth a look?
I agree with the idea of an unchanged team considering that there were so many changes in the team v Down and then six substitutions during the game. The newcomers and no so new comers deserve another outing. If we win this weekend the game v Meath may be one for some changes and maybe another newcomer or three. And if we don’t win you can expect some changes too. I, too, will be depending on Midwest to keep me up to date, having no Eir.
Hoping for another good win tomorrow. Best of luck lads!
Be surprised if there is not a change or 2 from James ..
Big game from the ” women ” too …
Serious backroom team with Moyles.. might take a year or so but they should be serious contenders in the next few years
Hopeful for a win to ease the pressure on the Meath game. Im expecting this to be extremely close. The league is a quare animal and as we all know, it can throw up all kinds of results! I’ll be keeping a close eye on the Cork game, fingers crossed Laois can do us a favour and take them out.
Mayo 88 and centrfield. Both of your comments are completely on the money. Another keeper option badly needed also a full back so that we can release mullin
Fair play to management to give the newbies another chance to show their wares today and hope to see a few more come in during the game but it would be great to see Harry & the Doc get 20 mins each to ease them back into the fray. Priority is a win and on to Meath with confidence.
I think that he is making sure of the points thus the stability.
Disappointing that a few other members of the panel have not been selected on this occasion – hardly conducive to optimum contentment.
On a related topic, I absolutely hate the Mayo team shorts.
You’d be nearly better off leaving the experimenting to the Sligo and Leitrim game. We cant be arsing around in D2, just pick the players that will get the job done and get us back where we belong for next season, where it looks like we’ll have fans back at games.
If we win today then their could be a bit of expermenting with the Meath game, pressure will be off and all eyes will be on the likely Cork “cup final” game.
Dont agree with some posters suggesting Mullin and Durcan play in the forwards. For me they are playing in their best positions now. They are so dangerous attacking at pace from deep, it’s almost impossible to deal with, we would lose that element of their game if they play in forwards. Also who made way for them? Regarding Keegan, yes his preferred position is half back but he cant do the flat out press and attack for a full game, McLaughlan and Durcan can, that’s why they are there. For me Coen has to play at 6, we need a player like him to sit in defence while the other two attack.

Eamon Ó Corcora – you’re back again, I see, having another pop at the same player you posted a disgraceful comment about last week while the match was in progress. You’re not going in with the studs up like you did last time but neither is there any recognition from you that you were out of order then. If you think you can blithely continue on posting comments here as if nothing happened then you’re sadly mistaken.
I actually see mullin as a future seriously mobile midfield er but only when we get a full back. Its a long time since Kevin cahill.
Willie Joe . Looking back it looked & sounded terrible . Going in with the ” Studs up ” as you put it was not my intention . Being involved in the GAA, I know the commitment that players & The management Team give over many years of their lives . Players are human beings at the end of the day and it is wrong to single anybody out . Apologies to All concerned & all the best for the year ahead .
Thanks for that, Eamon, apology accepted. It’s always my aim to ensure that criticisms of players are measured and reasonable and I appreciate your recognition of the need for reasonableness.
