It’s Saturday evening and there’s still no sign of a team announcement from our side ahead of tomorrow’s crunch NFL Division One clash against Kildare at St Conleth’s Park, Newbridge (throw-in 2pm). Not to worry – here are a few other bits and pieces, some related to tomorrow’s match, some not, to keep you going.
Stuff of relevance to the Kildare match first. They named their team last night – full details here. If you’re driving to Newbridge, there’s free parking in the Whitewater shopping centre car-park tomorrow if you wave a match programme from the game at them. Full details on that offer here.
Sticking to team news – the line-up we’ve named for tomorrow’s NHL Division 2B match against Down at Portaferry is here. Keith Higgins doesn’t start for the stickmen tomorrow but, as others have pointed out, the prospect that he’ll line out instead for the footballers is a bit fanciful. Much as I’d love to see a few trademark surging runs from him at St Conleth’s Park, I simply cannot see that happening.
Moving on from inter-county action, congrats to Rice College Westport who, despite having to make do for much of the game with fourteen players, beat St Attracta’s of Tubbercurry by 1-13 to 0-10 in Tuam to claim the Connacht Colleges Senior A football title for the first ever time. Match report on that one is here and these were the scenes at Tuam Stadium after the final whistle sounded:

Finally, Cora Staunton continues to grab the headlines Down Under, where she’s taken to the oval ball game like the proverbial duck to water. Here’s the latest cameo of brilliance from the Carnacon legend who played her part in a comprehensive win for her adopted GWS Giants team:

Agree with you on keith, Willie Joe. If we see him at all it will only be after the hurlers season finishes
What an All Ireland win would do for the county and us as fans. Look at Westport after winning Intermediate Final; GAA in the town is flying. Their fundraiser is a sell out tonight. And now their school after winning Connacht A Final. ‘A rising tide lifts all boats’ comes to mind.
There is news now.
I hope Clarke isn’t injured
Ger Bohan, why are you so pessimistic about Keith,s future with Mayo football. I have not seen or heard any comment from himself regarding this.

No Cillian, or loftus, we must’nt be bothered about scoring frees !
Well done to the young lads from Rice College, there is nothing like watching kids of this age giving their all for their team. These games are free from negativity and overflowing with enthusiasm and the spirit of endeavor. Delighted for Cora down under, she is flying the flag proudly for Mayo and indeed Ireland, what an amazingly gifted and inspirational athlete she is.
Well done again to Cora what a score.
Jesus, some burst of acceleration from Cora there, and she took that goal in true GAA style, kicking action and all. Is it me or does she look the fittest she’s been in quite some time?
Great to see Rice College achieve an historic win, and beating one of the powerhouses of the game (St. Jarlath’s) in the semi. Seems to me that the colleges’ scene in Connacht has become a lot more democratic since Jarlath’s stopped boarding.
