Three wins for Mayo clubs

It was a good day on the provincial club scene for the Mayo champions at senior, intermediate and junior level, with Charlestown, Westport and Kiltimagh all recording wins.  Pride of place has to go to the lads from Kiltimagh who claimed the Connacht junior title with a one-point win after extra-time over Galway’s An Spideal.  The teams ended normal time level at nine points each but the boys in blue edged home by 0-11 to 0-10 in extra-time to claim an historic provincial crown.

Charlestown also had a Jedward-like brush with defeat today when they too needed extra-time to make it past Roscommon senior champions, Castlerea.  From what I gather, the Sarsfields were fortunate enough to make it to extra-time, with Castlerea missing a clear goal chance which would have put them six points up with only five minutes to go but the Mayo lads pulled the fat from the fire with three late points from Paul (two) and Tony Mulligan, making it 1-6 to 0-9 at the end of normal time.  They then went on to finish the job in extra-time, with the two Mulligans pointing again as did Tom Parsons and the Mayo champions squeezed home on a 1-9 to 0-11 scoreline.  Charlestown face defending Connacht champions, Galway’s Corofin, in the provincial final two weeks from now.

Westport had an easier time of it at McHale Park today where they saw off the challenge of Sligo’s Geevagh in the Connacht intermediate semi-final by 2-12 to 0-10.   I’m not sure who they’ll be playing in the Connacht intermediate final but I guess all will be revealed soon.

Finally, commiserations to the ladies of Carnacon and Breaffy who lost their respective All-Ireland semi-finals today.  The 2008 All-Ireland senior champions were beaten by Cork’s Donoughmore on a scoreline of 2-6 to 1-8, while the girls of Breaffy were pretty much outclassed in their intermediate semi-final against St Brigid’s of Dublin where they went under by 6-10 to 0-1.
