Tickets for the New Year Senior football challenge match against Sligo – to be played at James Stephens Park, Ballina on 2nd January (throw-in 1pm) – are now on sale. The link to purchase tickets online is here.

As already announced, this is a fundraiser for Mindspace Mayo, with the aim of shining a light on mental health issues. A hugely worthwhile initiative, in other words. More on the match and the involvement of Mindspace Mayo in it is here.

The game will also be streamed live by Mayo GAA TV. There’s no link for that as yet but no doubt there will be ahead of match day.

  1. How many would we expect at it folks ? 1500/2000 . Any takers for a guess. How many does Ballina pitch hold?

  2. Must admit quite a few players in that picture that I don’t recognise. If anyone could put names to the above group it would be much appreciated.

  3. I see McHale Park needs minding/managed carefully according to County Chairman. He puts it down to Climate change and overuse! Perhaps it was used too early last year and surely the County championship should be played a month earlier in 2023 to avoid further damage!
Nollaig shona WJ and your clann agus gach daoine ar an blog! Also remembering your late Dad and all our loved ones at this time of the year. Beannacht De lena anamhacha dilis.
Nollaig shona agus athbliain faoi mhaise daoibh.
    Mhuigeo Abu!

  4. Good few young lads I wouldnt recognise too. I see Bob Tuohy there from castlebar – biggest man in the back row along with Fallon. I think Tom OFlaherty and conal Dawson are there too. Several of those guys would likely be development squad players in 2023.

  5. Cathal – it could well be the same shot as I’ve used in the piece. That one was on the Mayo GAA Twitter account. Plenty of new faces in it, despite the claims to the contrary.

  6. @Joe heard Tommy conroy took part in 3 out 5 training sessions with the mayo team from in a stephen rochford interview and did training well and his fitness going well!

  7. Tommy was confirmed in a reduced workload return to play and basically on track to see him next year in action.

  8. Hard to believe Nathan Moran, Conor Diskin and Darren Quinn didnt make that panel ,all better than at least 10 of the squad pictured.

  9. I can’t believe people are saying certain players should be on the panel instead of others that are there, do they not not realise that there are several reasons for that

  10. Looking forward to the challenge match ans good to see Ballina get a game the pitch will be immaculate and the welcome from the Stephenites warm. Does anyone know how to get tickets to the FBD matches in the Dome? Finally may I wish every one on the blog a very happy Christmas and thank you Willie Joe for all you do for us and the excellent service you provide

  11. Glory days in the seventies Ballina had a guy on the road in that would not let his mother in free
I was driving about 5 player’s and he wanted to charge me ,the Castlebar players would not let me pay and a backlog of cars soon built up and all agreed that the non playing drivers should not pay.An executive of the club came down from the club house and sorted it out. After the match we went to the club house for drinks as usual until Paddy Moclair reminded us that there was a second pub in Ballina. Great memories.
