The are three Mayo matches to report on today, which produced two wins and a loss.

Let’s start with the wins. The first was the county’s camogie team who enjoyed a winning start to their League campaign. They got the better of Louth by 1-14 to 2-4 in a game played at Cooley Kickhams GAA club. Nest up for them is a meeting with Wicklow this day week.

The Mayo LGFA U16s (above) also had a big win today. In fact, they gave a right old shellacking to Kerry in a challenge match played at UL this afternoon. The final score in that one was 6-10 to 1-16.

The defeat occurred in the U20 Leo Murphy Cup, where Mayo were well beaten by Donegal at MacCumhaill Park in Ballybofey. Despite a bright opening, aided by a goal from midfielder Conor Reid, which saw Maurice Sheridan’s charges lead by three midway through the first half, the home side forged ahead to lead by four at the break. Donegal won at the finish by nine points, on a scoreline of 2-10 to 1-4.

  1. Disappointing result for the u20 team. I would hope they will be better in the championship. Barely scored at all in the second half.

  2. Surprised to see such a comprehensive defeat for the U20s. I thought they looked in good shape vs Roscommon the first day. Would it not have made sense for the 3 senior lads to head along this weekend and try to build a bit of chemistry with their teammates ahead of championship? No sign of Ethan Henry or Owen McHale yet this year either.

  3. I was just going to say that. Where is Ethan Henry? He should be one of the main men in this team. He must be injured I’m guessing, can anyone from Mayo Gaels confirm?
I’m not sure if Owen McHale is still u20 but if he is he sound also be in there too. Looked very promising for belmullet last year.

  4. Who are the 3 senior lads? Callanan, Irwin and ??
Are they allowed play for 20s as they’ve played league football?

  5. Donnacha McHugh as well. They’re allowed play for the U20s until they play a senior championship game this year.

  6. Hard for maurice Sheridan to prepare for championship in 4 weeks time when he can’t get his best team on the pitch, all lads on the senior panel should of been available to him this week.

  7. Ontheroad14 he was only missing Frank Irwin from the 19 minor team that defeated Galway and Dublin. That should be no excuse for yesterdays poor result.

  8. Does anyone believe that young ambitious athletes will not win for the best team,of course they want to part of a team with genuine title hopes,I certainly don’t blame them and if one of them for injuries at a challenge match most people would give our about playing them, the very best of luck to all the players involved

  9. Just a thought forget about the 2019 team, not relevant to the point im making, the best player on that 19 team was ethan henry and hes missing also, he was missing callinan and donnacha mchugh too , Im not making a excuse for the performance im saying it isn’t ideal preparation for championship in only a few weeks time.
