At MacHale Park this afternoon Tooreen clinched their third county SHC title in a row, beating Castlebar Mitchels by 0-18 to 1-13. It was the East Mayo club’s 30th county title but they were made to battle hard by the underdogs today before eventually getting their hands on the TJ Tyrell Cup.
Tooreen led by three points at the break and when they extended this lead to six points early in the second half it looked like they’d win with ease. With five minutes to go the gap between the sides was still six points but a goal in injury time for Mitchels by Padraig O’Flynn left them only two adrift at the finish.
Tooreen now advance to the Connacht Intermediate Championship where they’ll face Four Roads of Roscommon. Meanwhile Castlebar will, no doubt, take great comfort from their performance today, in which they gave a a very good account of themselves and ran the champions so close.
Colm Gannon’s match report for RTÉ on the county SHC final is here.
There was plenty of action on the football scene this weekend as well, with League and Championship spoils both being decided. Here’s a quick run-down on the weekend’s football results.
Yesterday evening at MacHale Park Castlebar Mitchels B got the better of Kilmaine in the county Junior final. Mitchels’ second string claimed the Pete McDonnell Cup and, with it, promotion to Intermediate level for next year after they emerged 0-14 to 0-11 winners.
This afternoon at MacHale Park – in what was the curtain-raiser to the hurling decider – Eastern Gaels captured the county Junior B football title. They did so by beating Crossmolina B by 3-11 to 2-10. Also this afternoon, in nearby Islandeady, Parke’s B team beat Burrishoole B by 2-7 to 0-9 in the Junior C football decider.
This weekend also saw the final round of adult football League matches and so the four divisional titles for 2019 were decided. Congrats to Knockmore (Division 1), Charlestown (Division 2), The Neale (Division 3) and Ardagh (Division 4) on winning their respective League titles.
Finally, it was a mixed bag for teams from the county in ladies football this weekend. Yesterday, county champions Carnacon were beaten in the Connacht LGFA Senior Championship semi-final. They lost out to Galway’s Kilkerrin Clonberne by 4-9 to 2-4 in a match played at the Centre of Excellence in Bekan.
There was better luck this afternoon for MacHale Rovers. They came out on top today at Ballyhaunis against Claregalway in the Connacht LGFA Junior final, winning out by 4-8 to 0-11. Well done to them.
Congrats to Tooreen, winning Connaught will be their goal, but well done to C’bar, a performance that augers well for the future!
That wont do against 4 roads. Well done to both teams.
