U17 team named to play Galway this evening

We’ve named our match day panel for this evening’s Connacht U17 Championship clash with Galway at Tuam Stadium (throw-in 7pm). Here’s the list of the starting team and subs we’ve named for this Round 4 fixture:

We’ve made one change to the team that got the better of Sligo last weekend. Back into the starting team comes James Maheady – who was suspended for the last game – and he replaces Rory Conway.

If you’re planning on heading to St Jarlath’s Park for the game, you’ll need to get your ticket in advance and may do so here.

Connacht GAA are streaming the game, at a cost of €10, and the link for that is here.

We’ll be doing a Final Whistle podcast after tonight’s game and that’ll be available for our club members on Patreon a bit later on tonight.

The best of luck to the lads in this evening’s game.

  1. Good first half here, 0-6 to 0-1 up. Weathered early Galway pressure and (most unlike us) all bar one point from play.

  2. Mayo are 0-6 to 0-1 up at half-time, having played against a strong wind. Galway scored after 17 seconds but didn’t score again after that. Very defensive approach by both teams but Mayo got on top as the half wore on. John MacGonagle, Rio Mortimer and Lorcan Silke excellent in the full-back line, Diarmuid Duffy a real powerhouse breaking forward and Niall Hurley (two points) lively up top. Mayo’s last two points came from excellent long-range frees into the wind by goalkeeper David Dolan. Galway’s no.4 was black carded for a third-man tackle on Diarmuid Duffy just before the break so they’re down to 14 for the first seven minutes of the second half.

  3. listening on midwest. sounds like an excellent performance from management and players.
Maybe the doom merchants that have been shouting lately might have to keep quiet for a couple of days? Maybe the underage structures arent so bad after all!? Maybe credit is due to everyone working away behind the scenes with little acknowledgement?

  4. Seriously impressive side , love that team , as mentioned in commentary the work rate and team work was magnificent

  5. Really impressive win by the U17s. They drove on strongly in the third quarter, James Maheady exploding into the contest and then Diarmuid Duffy settled it with a cracking goal. They were scoring for fun at the finish, winning by 1-15 to 0-4. They’re in the Conancht final now and their place is guaranteed in the All-Ireland quarter-final too. Super stuff!

  6. Just the performance we needed after the last few weeks. Fair play to the lads, excited to follow them this season.

  7. Must be a long time since we beat Galway by that margin at underage? They’ve given us 1 or 2 beatings to be fair.

Some impressive showings in the full back line, Duffy and maheady in the half forward line, and the 2 lads inside were decent again.

  8. Mayo were terrific, really impressed by no 12 who got the Goal, Galway were very poor, tactically very inept.
They’ll probably get another shot at Mayo but honestly that’s a quality Mayo team there…

  9. Brilliant win! A pity the streaming was so poor. I only got short glimpse!! Very frustrating. Is there any way of watching the match back?

  10. Team looked to be very well coached, defense hardly gave the much-vaunted Galway forwards a sniff. Excellent work rate from 1-15 for the full 60 minutes, Rio Mortimer and Lorcan Silke played really well.

Big performances from Mahady and Duffy in particular, who look like thoroughbreds. Duffy scorched his man for pace and blasted a super goal.

  11. Stunning victory for Mayo. Took 20 minutes to score but once they did they didn’t look back. Galway was free scoring coming into tonights game but it seems tonight was the first time their encountered a team that gave them no time or space to score and in truth they looked clueless. Mayo more than good enough to win this Connacht title and are a contender in the All-Ireland series.

  12. By God that was a tonic. Well done to all on and off pitch.
Pretty sure we’ve not ever hammered Galway at minor in that manner.

  13. 1958 we beat Galway at minor by 18pts.
Now, a forgotten fact. We won the 1953 minor All Ireland beating Clare in the final!!
    The archive is a treasure.

  14. WJ
Thanks for that WJ. The stream froze several times and I missed most of the game. I have decent internet I think. I can get internet tv no problem, view films, YouTube etc. If your feed was ok then the problem isn’t at the other end. It must be mine. Seldom enough we hammer Galway and not being able to see it was frustrating to say the least. The dag had to beat a hasty retreat for his own well being!
I couldn’t go this evening – bloody Covid!!. I’ll have no streaming problems the next day. I’ll be there myself to watch a really good team playing the kind of football I enjoy.

  15. Mine only froze the once, Diehard, and just for a few seconds during the first half. Otherwise it worked fine right throughout and the camera work was decent enough too. Of course, with Finno on the commentary it was like a podcast production!

  16. Impressive display from Mayo tonight & after listening to Mike’s interview with Sean Deane on the pod there it is clear that he wants them to enjoy their football. A breath of fresh air off the field as well as on. The philosophy seems sound, right down to the rota for sweeping the dressing room. We could get some good days out with these lads. Well done Mayo.

  17. @Diehard, the video is up now on the Connacht GAA Inplayer page now. Takes them an hour or two after the game ends to get it uploaded but you’ll have access for 24 hours to it.

No big issues on the stream my end. A stutter a handful of times I’d assume happened my end (fixed wireless so rain/fog would do that). Hopefully you’ll have more joy watching back the video where it can buffer than you managed with the live stream where any latency will cause bigger problems.

  18. Does anyone know how the discord works after you sign up to pateron. I downloaded it but dont know what to do next..

  19. Lahanman – you need to connect your Patreon and Discord accounts (from within Patreon) to make it work. I’ll mail you separately on how to do this, it’s pretty straightforward.

  20. Thanks Pseudonym for that. I really enjoyed watching it…..Great win….great football
