Unchanged LGFA team for Saturday

Ladies football is where it’s at for us this weekend, with the county’s LGFA team back in Championship action on Saturday. The opposition this time are Monaghan and the venue is Ballinamore with the game fixed for 2pm.

Earlier on today we named our team for this Round 2 match in Group 1 of the Senior Championship and it’s the same fifteen who lined out in the win over Cavan in the opening round last weekend. For the record, here’s the team we’ve named:

Mayo (LGFA SFC Group 1 Round 2 v Monaghan, 17/7/2021): Aisling Tarpey (Foxrock Cabinteely); Saoirse Lally (Westport), Clodagh McManamon (Burrishoole, captain), Ella Brennan (Charlestown Sarsfields); Tamara O’Connor (Cill Chomain), Eilis Ronayne (Davitts), Kathryn Sullivan (Castlebar Mitchels); Ciara Needham (Louisburgh), Sinead Cafferkey (Kilmovee Shamrocks); Fiona Doherty (Moy Davitts), Rachel Kearns (MacHale Rovers), Mary McHale (Kilmoremoy); Grace Kelly (Moy Davitts), Shauna Howley (Knockmore), Tara Needham (Louisburgh).

There’s one positional switch, which sees Eilis Ronayne shifting to centre-back, swapping places with Tamara O’Connor who moves to the wing. Otherwise it’s as you were from the last day.

Monaghan were well beaten by Armagh in their opening round game last weekend, with the Orchard County prevailing by 4-17 to 1-14, so they’ll be very keen to get off the mark on Saturday. After our positive display against Cavan, though, Michael Moyles’ team will be keen to make is two from two the next day and in doing so take another step towards qualification for the knock-out stages of the Championship.

Saturday’s game is being streamed live free of charge on the LGFA/TG4 Player. The link for that is here.

Best of luck to the team in Ballinamore on Saturday.

  1. Best of luck to our women. As always I expect lots of energy, talent and passion. It’s a great recipe for success. Keep it up and know we are all behind you and very proud of you. Maigheo abú.

  2. Good luck to our ladies today, same team selection as last week so good to see he now knows who his best players are. Expecting a good performance today.

  3. Level at half time, monaghan defending well, forcing mayo to shoot from difficult angles. Difficult conditions, fitness will have bigger than normal bearing on result.

  4. Shootout in Ballinamore! Bizarre carry-on – the Championship is in the group stages so you’d have thought that it would be a point apiece when it finished level in normal time but instead extra-time was called. Now it’s finished all-square after extra-time, on twelve points each, and apparently it’s going to be decided on free kicks. I know the LGFA have pioneered many worthwhile changes to the game but this is weird beyond belief.

  5. Mayo won the free-kick shootout 1-0. Shauna Howley – sister of ex-Mayo player Trevor – scored the one that one it. That’s twice in less than a week that a placed-ball kick from a Knockmore player has won a Championship game for Mayo!

  6. What a game in Ballinamore. Lots of mistakes, ok, but what effort in absolutely sweltering conditions. And then extra time and still level and then, we spectators at least, were amazed to find it was a five a side free kicking competition to find a winner. I’m not sure but I think Shauna Howley’s successful shot was Mayo’s first. I would blame nobody for missing, they must all have been absolutely exhausted. We are truly blessed to have such a fine generation of young men and women
