Back in 2020, with the Covid pandemic then in what would subsequently prove to be just its early stages, Charlestown native Tom Brett and Mayo News columnist Seán Rice published a book entitled We are Mayo.
It’s a book about Mayo, about its geographic location in the world, its rivers, lakes and mountains, its history and its infrastructure, its people, its sporting and other legends. The book is aimed at Mayo people at home and abroad, especially the large Mayo diaspora spread around the world. I did a short piece on it back in 2020 – that’s here.
There were plans to launch the book formally back then but Covid put paid to so many things, this one included. But the pandemic’s grip has finally lessened and many initiatives are having fresh life breathed into them.
So on Thursday this week, at the County Library in Castlebar, We are Mayo will finally get the proper launch it deserves. Ireland’s First Woman Sabina Higgins – who is, of course, a native of Ballindine and who wrote the book’s Foreword – is the special guest at the launch, which takes place at 5pm on Thursday evening.
The book, an attractive coffee-table style hardback, will be on special offer for €25 and you’ll be able to get your copy of it autographed at the launch.
Best of luck to Tom and Seán for the launch and for the book’s success.
